Fallout 4’s Risky Rumored Update Would Not Be For Everyone, But That’s Okay

In the last year or so, the now-decade-old Fallout 4 has experienced a resurgence of sorts due to the recent success of the live-action Fallout TV show. Bethesda’s hit RPG rose to the top of the sales charts on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC back in 2024, and it, along with the other mainline Fallout titles, became the talk of the town for quite some time. Around the same period as the premiere of the Fallout TV show, Bethesda launched a free next-gen upgrade for Fallout 4 across all platforms. The update added, among other things, some stability enhancements and a 60 FPS performance mode on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

Since the launch of its next-gen upgrade, the hype surrounding Fallout 4 has gradually started to die down again, and Bethesda has largely shifted its focus towards other projects, like Fallout 76 and Starfield. Fallout 4, in fact, hasn’t received a single update since May 2024, so it’s clear that the company hasn’t worked on the title in any large-scale capacity as of late. This, however, may change soon because, according to a new rumor, the game is going to get a major, albeit potentially controversial, mod-related update in the near future.

Fallout 4 is Reportedly Getting Paid Mod Support in the Near Future

Doom Classic Marine Armor, a Creation Club mod for Fallout 4

A popular YouTuber, JuiceHead, alleged in a video not too long ago that Fallout 4 will receive official paid mod support in the coming months. This, in other words, means that the game will get a marketplace, similar to the ones in Skyrim and Starfield, where mod creators will be able to sell and share their mods on both PCs and consoles. JuiceHead didn’t specify exactly when this rumored update will come out, but it’s possible that its launch will coincide with the debut of the Fallout TV show’s second upcoming season.

Fallout 4’s Current Paid Mod System is More Limited Compared to Skyrim and Starfield’s Creations

Those who are familiar with Fallout 4 may initially find this rumor a bit confusing. The game, after all, already has paid mods and a storefront where players can buy them from. That said, it’s important to note that the paid mod system in the title is not the same as the one in other Bethesda games. Fallout 4, for those who don’t know, has something called Creation Club, which is basically a system in which modders directly collaborate with Bethesda to release curated, DLC-like content for the game. Skyrim and Starfield, on the other hand, have the Creations system. In those games, modders can distribute their mods, both free and paid, without needing them to be directly selected by Bethesda itself.

If these rumors are actually true, a lot of gamers are probably going to be angry at Bethesda for adding yet another monetization system to its game more than 10 years after its release. As understandable as those criticisms may be, though, this update wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing. By adding Creations to Fallout 4, more modders than ever before will be able to get compensated for the effort they put into their mods. At the same time, Fallout 4 could get a new lease on life, and the mods could give players (especially those on consoles) some new single-player content to enjoy as they wait for Fallout 5.

Mods Could Give Fallout Players Some New Single-Player Content to Enjoy

A guard in Fallout 4

The next mainline Fallout game, as most fans probably know by now, is not going to be released anytime soon. In addition to making post-launch content for Starfield, Bethesda is busy developing The Elder Scrolls 6, which probably won’t be released for another few years. By the time The Elder Scrolls 6 comes out, players will likely have to wait another 4 to 6 years for Fallout 5 to hit store shelves. Although the multiplayer-only Fallout 76 is still getting major updates to this day, many Fallout fans are currently itching for some new single-player content to experience. The rumored Fallout 4 Creations update could, as a result, fill this gap in Bethesda’s current portfolio.
