Roblox Disabling Unrated Game Experiences Starting September 30

Quickly sparking mixed reactions among audiences, Roblox has announced that it will be enforcing a new content maturity rating and subsequently disabling unrated experiences beginning September 30. Roblox has been marred by controversy in recent months, with parents and even government bodies questioning the safety of young players, and the game creation platform appears to be moving full steam ahead with new measures aimed at keeping potentially harmful content away from vulnerable users.

Since its launch back in 2006, Roblox has become one of the most popular platforms for both players and creatives. In August 2025, Roblox set a new record for the all-time highest concurrent player count, surpassing 47.4 million users, with many joining the platform to enjoy hit games like Dress to Impress, Grow a Garden, and more. While Roblox has allowed aspiring game developers to gain experience with various creation tools and thus introduced players to diverse new offerings, Roblox’s unrated content settings left many concerned with the potential for inappropriate content to proliferate on the platform. As such, a new series of guidelines has been announced for existing and future Roblox content, but not everyone is happy about the stricter changes.

New Roblox Rating Policy and Removal of Unrated Games

An update on the Roblox developer forum states that creators have until September 30 to ensure their games have a clearly displayed minimum age rating, with any unrated experiences set to become unplayable after this deadline. Previously, Roblox allowed users to leave their games marked as “unrated,” permitting experiences with more mature themes to be available for older players to enjoy. However, critics chastised the policy, with many noting that any user, regardless of age, would be able to access a Roblox game marked as unrated, as opposed to titles with 17+ ratings that then require age verification to play. As such, the new measures now require all creators to complete a Maturity & Compliance questionnaire to verify an appropriate age rating. This updated rating system will also be applied to classic experiences that may no longer be maintained by a creator with the implementation of an automated rating system.

The removal of unrated experiences and adjusted age ratings have been met with immediate backlash from users who worry about some of their favorite games no longer becoming playable. On the other hand, some have begun celebrating the new measure, as they see it as a way to preserve games while also ensuring younger players’ safety is prioritized. All unrated experiences can still be playtested by their creators, but a rating questionnaire must be completed before the game can be played by others. It remains to be seen just how many user-created games on Roblox will be affected by these new policies.
