Denmark-July-gambling-spend-up-12.9_-as-casinos-rise-in-popularityDenmark-July-gambling-spend-up-12.9_-as-casinos-rise-in-popularitySpillemyndigheden, Denmark’s gambling authority, has released its revenue update for July 2025, showing a significant upturn across most verticals. Total gambling spend reached DKK 634 million ($99 million), representing a 12.8% rise from the same period last year. Compared with June, revenue was also 8.4% higher, marking a notable rebound after previous months of slower activity.

Online Casinos Dominate July Performance

Online casinos were the main growth driver, accounting for DKK 349 million ($54.5 million) of the total market. This figure reflected a 20.5% increase from July 2024. Within this vertical, slots continued to capture the lion’s share of player spending, generating DKK 291.7 million ($45.6 million), or more than 83% of total online casino revenue. Blackjack followed with DKK 22.2 million ($3.46 million), while roulette contributed DKK 16.8 million ($2.62 million). Bingo, poker, and other games combined for smaller shares.

Mobile remained the most popular channel for online play, with 70.75% of all deposits made via smartphones. Computers contributed 17.61% of deposits, and the remainder came from other sources. Interestingly, Thursdays were identified as the busiest day for casino deposits, while weekends ranked lower, with Saturday and Sunday placing fifth and sixth, respectively.

Sports Betting Recovers After Decline

Sports wagering also performed strongly after two subdued months, with revenue reaching DKK 159 million ($24.8 million), up 6% year-on-year. Mobile betting dominated this segment as well, generating DKK 114.5 million ($17.9 million). Desktop activity produced DKK 28.1 million ($4.38 million), while retail betting shops accounted for DKK 16.8 million ($2.62 million).

The share of betting activity highlighted the continuing trend toward digital channels. Spillemyndigheden reported that 71.86% of all betting spend came through mobile, with just 10.54% recorded in physical shops.

Land-Based Gambling Sees Mixed Results

Land-based casinos contributed DKK 33 million ($5.15 million) in July, up 18.8% compared to the same period in 2024. Slot machines generated DKK 90 million ($14 million), which was slightly below the DKK 92 million achieved a year earlier, reflecting a 2.2% decline. Of this amount, 80.1% originated from arcades, while 19.9% was played on machines in restaurants.

Bingo continued to be tracked separately following regulatory changes that came into effect in late 2024. In July, the vertical brought in DKK 2 million ($312,000), in line with the monthly average since its introduction, aside from higher peaks in March and April.

Patterns for physical slot machine play mirrored online habits in some respects. Thursdays again ranked as the most active day, with 16:00 cited as the peak time for slot spending.

Rising Self-Exclusions and Regulatory Developments

The number of Danes registered with ROFUS, the country’s self-exclusion database, continued to climb. By the end of August, 62,577 individuals had signed up, with around 170 new registrants in the month. Permanent exclusion accounted for 65% of all cases. Men made up 78.2% of those registered, while women represented 21.3%.

Beyond the revenue statistics, political discussions also moved forward. Danish Tax Minister Rasmus Stoklund has opened dialogue with parliamentary parties about potential reforms to gambling advertising legislation, signaling that regulatory updates may soon accompany the sector’s financial momentum.

Overall, July 2025 marked a strong month for Denmark’s regulated gambling market. Online casinos stood out as the clear leader in growth, while sports betting rebounded and land-based casinos showed double-digit gains. The figures suggest a robust and evolving market landscape, even as regulatory pressures remain under consideration.
