Nintendo Switch Online Update Adds 2 Classic N64 Games

The latest update to the Nintendo Switch Online subscription service has added Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Tonic Trouble to the list of Nintendo 64 games in the Nintendo Classics library. Switch Online subscribers willing to pay $50 per year instead of $20 per year get access to everything available in the base tier plus free DLC and a selection of exclusive games reserved for the Expansion Pack.

Some of the highest-rated games ever made were released for the Nintendo 64, and so for many nostalgic gamers, the Switch Online Expansion Pack is worth it. While it started off fairly underwhelming, frequent updates to the Switch Online Expansion Pack have made it significantly better, with nearly every classic N64 title readily available. The latest update to Switch Online added yet another Nintendo 64 classic, though it’s one that is often overlooked.

As of the latest Switch Online update, Expansion Pack subscribers can check out Ubisoft-published games Rayman 2: The Great Escape and Tonic Trouble. Both are solid, with Tonic Trouble an underappreciated game itself, but Rayman 2 is certainly one of the most criminally underrated N64 games. While it received strong reviews at the time of its release, Rayman 2 is almost never mentioned whenever anyone talks about the greatest N64 games, despite it definitely belonging in the conversation.

Originally released as a Nintendo 64 console exclusive, Rayman 2: The Great Escape represented a massive leap forward for the titular Rayman. The original game is a tough-as-nails 2D platformer, but Rayman 2 is a full-blown 3D platformer with impressive graphics for the time. It made clever use of Rayman’s unique abilities to create exciting and fresh platforming challenges and stands tall with the other giants of its era, so it’s a shame that it’s rarely ever brought up in the same breath as games like Super Mario 64.

I personally love Rayman 2: The Great Escape and highly recommend it to any and all 3D platformer fans. And now, thanks to the Switch Online Expansion Pack, it’s even more easily accessible. Its addition to the Nintendo Classics library makes the Switch Online Expansion Pack’s Nintendo 64 collection that much more complete, but there are still some notable absences that hopefully make their debuts sooner rather than later.

Switch Online Still Needs Donkey Kong 64 and Super Smash Bros.

Out of all the Nintendo 64 games still missing from Switch Online, the two biggest ones are arguably Donkey Kong 64 and Super Smash Bros. A leaked list of Nintendo 64 games, which also included Rayman 2 well before it was actually announced to be coming to the service, suggests that both games will be added to the Expansion Pack tier of Switch Online at some point down the line, so fans should keep an eye out for an official reveal.
