A New Jersey man is now in custody after allegedly killing a man with a crossbow and barricading himself inside a home, triggering an hours-long standoff with law enforcement.
Pablo Criollo was in Kearny Saturday night, walking home for dinner, when an arrow suddenly pierced him in the back around 6:45 p.m., the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office said. Video of the seemingly random attack, which was obtained by NBC 4, shows 45-year-old Criollo stumbling, and then falling to the sidewalk shortly after he is hit. He was rushed to a University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead a short time later.
“We are completely shattered by this act of violence,” his family wrote in a GoFundMe set up after the incident. “Pablo came from Ecuador at the age of 16 to start a new life.”
Oscar Feijoo has since been charged in connection with the deadly violence. He’s facing counts including first-degree murder, first-degree aggravated arson and second- and fourth-degree weapons offenses. When he was initially approached by authorities on Sunday, he barricaded himself inside his home, prompting a response from the Hudson County Regional SWAT team, the prosecutor’s office said. Several fires were ignited inside the residence at about 5 a.m., but he did not emerge from the home until later in the afternoon.
By then, he was covered in ash and armed, the prosecutor’s office said. He was arrested around 1 p.m.
