Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jonathan Ross has been identified as the officer who fatally shot a Minneapolis woman in her SUV on Wednesday.
The 43-year-old agent has worked for ICE since at least 2016, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, which first reported the name of the officer accused of killing 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good. Ross previously lived in Texas and currently operates out of ICE field office St. Paul, according to The Intercept.
He was also involved in an ICE arrest involving a Minneapolis motorist in June that left him badly wounded when an undocumented driver dragged him 100 yards down a Minnesota street, causing hand and arm injuries requiring more than 30 stitches, according to court records.
Ross reportedly employed his Taser during that encounter, though driver Roberto Carlos Munoz — a sex offender from Guatemala — managed to temporarily escape. Munoz unsuccessfully argued to a jury last month that he was unaware Ross was a federal agent.
Ross’s identity became a point of contention on Wednesday when video taken by witnesses showed the masked officer firing three shots at Good as the mother of three drove forward as agents tried opening her vehicle’s door.
Good had just dropped off her 6-year-old child at school when she was gunned down blocks from her home, according to her ex-husband. She was with her current partner when she was killed. Good’s former husband described her as a devote Christian and said he’d never known her to participate in protests or engage in political activism.
Good, a U.S. citizen born in Colorado, also appears to have been charged with anything beyond a traffic ticket.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem claimed after the shooting that Good committed an act of “domestic terrorism” and defended Ross for protecting himself and other officers. She alleged that Good was using her vehicle to assault law enforcement officers.
Vice President JD Vance also defended Ross in a White House speech on Thursday, where he lashed out at “the media” and accused Good of being part of a “broader left-wing network” targeting ICE officers.
