Power Rangers is one of the most popular American Tokusatsu series. Since the original five Power Rangers, there have been a multitude of powerful heroes, but they couldn’t have achieved those heights alone. Many of the most prominent Power Rangers are led by an equally important mentor-figure who allows the Rangers to reach their full potential.
Since most of the Power Rangers are teenagers, it would be extremely irresponsible to send them into battle unprepared. This is why most of the Rangers are also accompanied by a more war-hardened and often retired warrior to guide them. That said, several prominent mentors also make their Ranger debut within their respective series.

Captain William Mitchell is a Strict, But Caring Figure

Captain William Mitchell is the leader of the Lightspeed Aquabase. In Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue, the Rangers are more unified than other iterations and were compiled by Mitchell himself. He is also the father of both the Titanium and Pink Lightspeed Rangers, but that doesn’t mean he gives them any leeway. He is often extremely strict with the Lightspeed Rangers, but that isn’t without good reason.

Mitchell might seem overly strict, but that is all part of his instruction style. He cares deeply for the Rangers, albeit slightly more for his children. He sees their immense potential and does his best to help them achieve it, no matter the cost. Captain WIlliam might not be the clearest about his intentions, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t acting in the Rangers’ best interests.

Daggeron Shows the Rangers the Mystic Rangers What they Can Become
Power Rangers: Mystic Force
Daggeron is one of the ANcient Mystics from the Power Rangers Mystic Force iteration and also acts as the Rangers sixth edition to the team. Yet, he often acts more as a mentor than a straight addition to the team. He possesses immense power as the Solaris Knight and is restricted from battle as to not easily defeat many of the Rangers’ weaker opponents. Daggeron spends a large part of the series trapped before being returned to his human form by the Mystic Rangers.

Given that he possesses the power of the literal sun, Daggeron is one of the most powerful sixth Rangers in existence. Daggeron is sadly killed during the Mystic Rangers final battle, but the events have a silver lining. The show heavily implies that Daggeron becomes a Mystic Master, like the Snow Prince before him. This is never outright confirmed, but many fans of the series hold it in their personal cannon.

Cam Watanabe Travels Through Time to Assist the Ninja Rangers

Cam Watanabe begins the series as the Ninja Storm Rangers’ “guy in the chair”. He continuously provides the Ninja Storm Rangers with increasingly powerful technology before eventually joining them on the battlefield. Yet, to eventually become one of them, Cam has to actually travel through time. Cam becomes the Green Samurai Ranger and continues to serve the Ninja Storm Rangers even further.
Watanabe is extremely potent as both a Ranger and a Mentor. He progressively provides the Rangers with advice, but also helps them out when they really need it. That said, given his relative age to the Rangers, he fits much better as their companion than as their leader. Yet, that is part of the whole point of his character. He was never meant to mentor the Ranger, but did so out of necessity.

Udonna Has an Overtly Maternal Instinct Towards the Mystic Rangers

Udonna is the White Mystic Ranger and also the mother of the Red Mystic Ranger. She is one of the few White Rangers within the series and has the power of Snow Magic. She prefers to instruct rather than act, only really morphing if the Rangers are in mortal danger. That said, this decision comes mostly from trauma rather than a lack of power.
The White Mystic Ranger provides a very maternal instinct towards the Ranger team, even before discovering that Nick Russell is actually her long-lost son. This attachment can sometimes cause her to become misguidedly protective of the Rangers. She is never completely forthcoming with The Rangers, but that has more to do with her compassion than other implied factors.

Robert James Locks-In When Necessary
Power Rangers: Jungle Fury
Robert James, known in the series as R.J. is completely laid back. He is a martial arts master who retired to run a pizza shop. However, when a great evil makes its way to the earth once again, he rises to the occasion just as well. R.J. has a fabulous way of bringing out each of his Rangers’ best qualities without them realizing it. Casey Rhodes never would’ve unlocked his full potential if it hadn’t been for R.J.
Like many mentors, James also serves on the Power Rangers Jungle Fury team. As the Purple Jungle Fury Ranger, he is far more active than some of his previous mentors. He prefers to get his hands dirty and teach through action. That said, R.J. also knows when it’s time to take a step back and have a serious discussion, making him one of the greatest instructors in the later series.

Billy Cranston Later Returns as a Guide to the Cosmic Fury Rangers
Power Rangers: Cosmic Fury
Billy Cranston is the original Blue Ranger, but makes several prominent appearances throughout the series. His latest role has been a mentor to the Cosmic Fury Rangers, in which he does a wonderful job. Given his more timid nature, he is slightly less believable as a leader. That said, his years of experience fighting monsters has made him somewhat battle hardened.
It is impossible to argue that Cranston is not a pivotal figure to the Power Rangers franchise. Even when he retired from active duty, he remained as technical support for the team for many years. He might not be the strongest Ranger in history, but he has literal decades of experience. That alone makes him an absolutely invaluable leader.

Anubis Cruger Becomes the Leader of the Entire S.P.D.
Power Rangers: S.P.D.
Anubis Cruger, like Commander Mitchell, is a central figure of an entire Power Rangers organization. Unlike Mitchell, Cruger commands literal squads of Rangers. The series might only follow the A and B Squad Rangers, but that doesn’t mean they are the only teams under Cruger’s employ. After the events of the series, he even becomes the commander of the whole S.P.D.
When it comes to giving commands, Cruger is cold and somewhat unforgiving. However, his delivery clearly comes from many years of arduous battle. His arch-nemesis is the series’ big bad, and they even have an opportunity to clash within the official series. As the Shadow Ranger, Cruger is virtually unmasked.

Jen Scotts Mentors a New Generation of Rangers in an Official Board Game Spin-Off
Power Rangers: Hyperforce
Jen Scotts is the Pink Timeforce Ranger, and also serves as the mentor figure in the official Power Rangers spin-off board game. While most of her delivery is up to how you play the game, most fans agree she performs well in the role. After all, she is one of two Pink Rangers in history to lead the team. Scotts didn’t even need to switch colors to accompany her new title.

Tommy Oliver Is Just As Good of a Mentor as He Is a Ranger

Tommy Oliver is without a doubt the greatest Power Ranger of all time, but he is also one of the best mentors. He spends an incredible amount of time as a Ranger and finishes his tenure instructing a new team. Moreover, Dino Thunder is meant to be an homage to the original series, so his appearance is extremely fitting. As the Black Dino Thunder Ranger, Tommy is almost unbeatable, but many fans still prefer him in his original green gear.

The series often pays tribute to the man’s years of service to the Rangers and his impeccable power. More often than not, he lets the Dino Thunder Rangers do their own thing, only finally choosing to intervene when things get truly dire. That said, any Ranger should be extremely comforted knowing that Tommy Oliver is going to be the one to bail them out if things get serious. He’s saved the Universe multiple times and does an excellent job teaching the newer Rangers how to pick up the slack.

Zordon Is the First Recorded Figure to Introduce Humans to the Concept of Morphing
Mighty Morphin Power Ranger
Zordon is the original mentor who started it all. He selected the original five Mighty Morphin Rangers and the rest is history. Without him, there would’ve been no one to oppose Rita Repulsa and the earth would’ve swiftly fallen. Moreover, the leader even sacrifices himself to save the universe in one final act of true heroism.
Zordon’s sacrifice is one of the most consistent and lingering parts of the series’ extensive lore. So far, no one has found a way to restore him, despite Billy Cranston’s extensive efforts. He might not ever physically act in battle, but he is extremely honest with the Rangers and puts their needs first. He even understands when Trini, Zack, and Jason decide to retire. Zordon’s presence is still felt in the series to this day and is without a doubt one of the most important parts of the franchise.
