Open-World Games Coming In Summer 2026 To Keep An Eye On

With games like Crimson Desert already behind us, 2026 is only getting started when it comes to notable open-world games. From Grand Theft Auto 6 and Forza Horizon 6 to Fable and The Blood of Dawnwalker, plenty of long-awaited upcoming open-world titles are in the pipeline for the rest of the year. So the only question for fans of the genre is where to find all that free time to enjoy these massive games with vast worlds built on freedom.

While the majority of the most anticipated open-world games like GTA 6 traditionally release in the fall (presuming there will be no delays, that is), this doesn’t mean players will be out of new open-world releases in the next few months. In fact, summer 2026 already seems stacked with intriguing open-world titles, each with its own unique hooks, that deserve every player’s attention. Let’s take a look at the most promising open-world games currently scheduled to release from June to August.

Gothic 1 Remake

If players aren’t too busy with late-May releases early in June, Gothic 1 Remake opens the summer season of open-world games, bringing the fan-favorite old-school RPG classic to the table. With its compact yet grounded, believable, and harsh world that works by its own rules, Gothic 1 Remake promises to largely ignore modern trends. Instead, it immerses players in the good old days of the genre’s very first steps — where nothing is granted for free, everything has to be fought for, every character has a part to play, and every quest matters for the protagonist’s reputation.

Following the rather successful public demo, the full version of Gothic 1 Remake is seemingly in good hands. Still, it remains to be seen whether the Spanish studio Alkimia Interactive strikes just the right balance: staying faithful to the original while improving on it across the board, without alienating newcomers too much. For this goal, the devs have even abandoned some ideas like mini-games for Gothic 1 Remake, aiming to capture the overall atmosphere and mood of the original.

Solarpunk

After numerous delays, the open-world survival game Solarpunk is finally releasing in just a month on PC and consoles. A passion project mostly created by two people from the small team Cyberwave over four years of dedication, Solarpunk offers a familiar survival-slash-base-building experience. Its biggest selling points are the unique world of technically advanced floating islands to explore, as well as its distinct, stylized visuals that immerse fans in its special universe. If you’re looking for the next cozy, non-violent open-world base-building game, Solarpunk might just check all the boxes.

Exploration and building are the two main pillars of Solarpunk. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced

Interestingly, Gothic 1 Remake isn’t the only remake of an open-world classic coming this summer. Ubisoft has seemingly picked a perfect window to deliver the first full-fledged remake in the Assassin’s Creed series, free of any notable competitors, meaning all eyes will be on Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced. Coupled with a heavy nostalgia factor, as Black Flag is easily one of the fan-favorite titles in the franchise, the game might just outshine everything Ubisoft has delivered in quite some time.

From the looks of it, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is shaping up to be a near-perfect reimagining of the open-world pirate adventure. The devs are smartly avoiding RPG elements and focusing on what fans love: expanding the game in all the right places while delivering an irresistible technical update. Fortunately, staying faithful to the original probably means AC Black Flag Resynced will be of a comparable length — not a 100-hour commitment, but a sizable yet manageable journey through the Caribbean spanning around 50 hours.

Outward 2

Coming: Summer 2026 (TBA)

Building on the foundation of its beloved predecessor, Outward 2 potentially represents the most special (and probably the most long-lasting) open-world experience on this list, embodying everything the survival RPG genre has to offer. Nine Dots Studio promises to keep the challenging nature of the original, with a new journey to Aurai that’s even bigger, more beautiful, and more dangerous than before. On top of that, as more and more players start appreciating minimal handholding in open-world games, Outward 2 might find itself in the perfect spot after Crimson Desert — offering the same approach to numerous elements, including no enemy scaling, a natural sense of discovery, and little to no guidance in its vast and layered world.

Like the original, Outward 2 is built with player interactions in mind, supporting online and split-screen co-op to make the journey even more memorable and probably a tad more comfortable. With meaningful changes to core mechanics, such as more flexible combat and deeper survival systems, as well as much more fleshed-out factions and their quests, Outward 2 seems like a confident contender to become a new time-sink for thousands of RPG lovers in the coming months.

Agefield High: Rock the School

Summer might not be the best time to return to school, but if some older players are willing to relive those memories, Agefield High: Rock the School could be their go-to this summer. It’s worth mentioning that the game is currently scheduled to release during the third quarter of 2026 without an exact date, so there’s a small chance it might miss the summer period. Nevertheless, Agefield High: Rock the School seems like one of the most promising school-focused open-world games since Rockstar’s iconic Bully, immersing players in the early 2000s in this small American town through a classic coming-of-age adventure.

Players take on the role of high-schooler Sam and can freely explore the relatively compact open world of Agefield town, featuring the school campus, town center, cozy neighborhoods, and countryside surroundings, as they enjoy activities alone or with friends, balance their chores and hobbies, and try to win over their dream girl. Agefield High: Rock the School also features dynamic time management and a functional school system, with Sam needing to attend various types of lessons (or skip the schedule like a true rebel), as well as two different endings depending on your approach. All in all, despite its open-world nature, Agefield High: Rock the School is mostly described as a compact, condensed experience rather than another 50-hour epic.
