FromSoftware’s Rumored Pirate Soulslike Game Could Be a 10/10 Dream Come True

For as much as FromSoftware’s name has become synonymous with dark fantasy, the studio has never needed one specific kind of setting to make its ideas land in a big way. The real draw has always been how completely it commits to the danger, mystery, and history of a world, which is why the recent rumor of a pirate-themed FromSoftware game is so easy to get behind, even if the reports of its existence still need to be taken with a grain of salt. The developer has already confirmed it has multiple projects in development across different genres, and a pirate Soulslike would be one of the most exciting possibilities, were it real.

According to recent leaks, the rumored game is allegedly titled Cerulean Onslaught and would see FromSoftware stepping into a pirate-inspired action RPG with sailing, islands, and a ship serving as a hub, though none of that has been officially confirmed. Still, the idea is almost too good to dismiss. Pirates, cursed treasure, ghost ships, drowned ruins, sea monsters, and lost civilizations already sound like pieces of a FromSoftware world, and if this rumor proves true, it could be a 10/10 dream come true.

Pirates Fit FromSoftware Better Than They Should

Generally, pirates are treated as an adventure fantasy first. That usually means open seas, buried treasure, ship combat, taverns, rival crews, and some version of freedom players have to head out onto the open seas and go wherever the wind takes them. That version of the genre can obviously be exhilarating, but it’s also not the only way to approach pirates. At their darkest, pirate stories are about greed, isolation, violence, superstition, betrayal, and men chasing treasure into places they were never meant to discover. That version of piracy already sounds much closer to a FromSoftware game.

But that’s also why the rumor is so easy to latch onto, even before getting into any specific leaked details. FromSoftware wouldn’t need to force pirates into its formula because the pirate fantasy already has enough danger and myth built into it that all the studio would need to do is strip away the usual romanticism that comes with it and leave behind something stranger and, obviously, harsher. To be quite honest, it feels like the darker side of pirates was meant for FromSoftware, and FromSoftware for it. Plus, the industry has seen plenty of pirate games already that essentially do the same thing, and if FromSoftware is known for doing anything, it’s doing something different.

A Pirate Soulslike Could Avoid the Genre’s Biggest Trap

The game's dark Victorian Era setting - Bloodborne

It’s true that pirate games tend to live or die by how much freedom they can promise, and it makes sense. The idea of open seas, ship battles, buried treasure, rival crews, hidden islands, and complete freedom is immediately exciting. However, it also creates expectations that are almost impossible to fully satisfy. Once the novelty of sailing wears down, a pirate game has to give players more than distance to cross and supplies to manage. The world has to keep feeling worth investigating.

To be quite honest, it feels like the darker side of pirates was meant for FromSoftware, and FromSoftware for it.

That’s where FromSoftware could have a real advantage with this rumor, assuming there is any truth to it. The studio has always been good at making exploration feel tense because the player rarely has a full sense of what they are walking into. A pirate setting gives that instinct a natural new shape because the genre is already built around uncertainty. Every voyage is supposed to carry the possibility of reward, danger, betrayal, or something that was better left undiscovered.

That would matter because a pirate Soulslike could lose its identity if it chased the genre’s usual checklist too closely. Ship customization, naval battles, crew management, and treasure hunting could all have a place, but the strongest version of this idea would let those features feed into the world rather than become the whole point. The dream version of this rumor is a dangerous, strange, tightly designed action RPG where the pirate fantasy gives FromSoftware new mythology to twist into something harsher.

The Ship Hub Could Be the Game’s Best Idea

If there’s one leaked detail that sounds especially promising, though, it’s the idea of the player’s ship serving as a hub. In a pirate Soulslike, the ship should be more than the place players return to between dangerous areas. It should be the clearest sign of the journey itself, carrying the crew, the scars, the rewards, and possibly even the consequences of everything the player has brought back from the world.

The dream version of this rumor is a dangerous, strange, tightly designed action RPG where the pirate fantasy gives FromSoftware new mythology to twist into something harsher.

That could make the ship one of the most important parts of the entire game. FromSoftware’s hubs are often memorable because they change in small but meaningful ways as players push farther into the unknown. A pirate ship could make those changes easier to notice. New faces could appear onboard, strange discoveries could alter the space, and parts of the ship could open up over time. Even the simple act of returning from a voyage could become part of the core gameplay loop.

The idea gets even more interesting if the ship becomes unsettling over time. Classic FromSoftware hubs tend to offer relief without ever feeling completely safe, and a pirate ship would be a great place to explore that idea even further. The more players depend on it, the more it could start reflecting the darker parts of the journey. For a pirate Soulslike, that could turn the ship into something inviting enough to feel like home and just strange enough to make players question what they’ve been carrying with them this whole time.

Of course, the ship is only one piece of the pitch, but it nonetheless shows why the idea has so much potential. A pirate Soulslike from FromSoftware would have more to draw from than ships, swords, and treasure maps. The darker side of piracy already gives the studio the kind of material it thrives on—greed that leads people too far, superstition that turns into something real, and exploration that feels dangerous because every discovery comes with a cost. Cerulean Onslaught is still only a rumor, but if FromSoftware is really building a game around that kind of fantasy, it’s easy to see why the idea already sounds like a 10/10 dream come true.
