The Isekai genre has expanded greatly over the last decade. While anime series like Sword Art Online were among the first to introduce the genre to fans overseas back in the day, many other hit Isekai anime have since come out. Anime series like The Rising of the Shield Hero and That Time I Got Reincarnated As a Slime are consistently growing in popularity, and new Isekai series like Lord of Mysteries have already enjoyed massive success. That said, in the modern era, specifically in 2026, the King of Isekai anime might have already been decided. Out of all the Isekai series that have aired this year so far, there has been a clear standout hit, and that’s Re:Zero.
Re:Zero Season 4 has showcased its potential time and again, and has proven itself again by holding the record for the single highest-rated anime episode of the whole year. In the 2027 Crunchyroll Awards, it could once again come out as the grand winner of the Best Isekai genre.
Re: Zero Season 4 Proves Itself To Be The Biggest Isekai of 2026 With The Single Highest Rated Episode On IMDb
The Isekai genre of anime refers to series that are, in simple terms, “otherworldly.” Usually, the main character is transported to a world different from their own in various ways, which can include reincarnation or teleportation. Today, in Japan, this genre has been dominating and is considered to be one of the most popular in the whole country. It has even caught on greatly overseas. Due to the sheer popularity of the medium, though, themes, settings, and character archetypes can feel oversaturated and repetitive when it comes to Isekai. With that being said, some Isekai series still know how to distinguish themselves from the rest, especially Re:Zero.
Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World is a series originally published as a novel by Tappei Nagatsuki. Serialization for the story started on April 20, 2012, and even today, it’s still ongoing. According to the creator, it is still nowhere near its conclusion. Since its growing popularity, the series also received a light novel on January 24, 2014, as well as a manga on June 27, 2014, both by Media Factory. Its true breakout, however, would be its TV anime adaptation, which first came on April 4, 2016, and was produced by White Fox. Since then, the series has received a second season in 2021, a third season in 2025, and now, a fourth season in 2026 that aired between April 8 and June 17, 2026. Re:Zero Season 4 is returning again for its second cour on August 12, 2026, but already, the series has delivered tremendous quality.
With just 11 episodes, Re:Zero Season 4 has blown the competition out of the water. The episodes have been rated incredibly high across the board. For one, Season 4 episodes 3 and 9 have both received a 9.8/10 rating on IMDb. What’s more impressive is that Season 4 Episode 8 has an even higher rating, at 9.9/10 — an almost perfect score. It achieved this with 26,000 ratings. With this near-perfect rating, it becomes the highest-rated anime episode of the year, and one of the highest-rated anime episodes of all time. Undoubtedly, Re:Zero is the greatest Isekai of this year, and it competes with other genres as well.
Re:Zero’s Dominance Continues After Being Crowned as Isekai of the Year With Its Third Season
Re:Zero has been winning big in 2026. Earlier this year, on April 2, 2026, Re:Zero was one of the series nominated for the award of Best Isekai of 2026 at the Crunchyroll Awards. When the event ceremony unfolded on May 23, 2026, we were not surprised to see Re:Zero take the crown and become known as Isekai of the Year. This victory is impressive, as it saw the series compete with other major Isekai series like Konosuba.

Why Re:Zero Season 4 Will Only Improve In Quality Even Further
Re:Zero Season 3 distinguished itself during the Crunchyroll Awards of 2026, but undoubtedly, the series is not done winning at the moment. Since Re:Zero Season 4 aired in 2026, it is eligible for the 2027 Crunchyroll Awards. In other words, unless the judges decide against it, the series will more than likely be a nominee again next year.
With Re:Zero Season 4 being arguably even better than Season 3, it could potentially snatch the crown again and become the best Isekai of 2027. Hopefully, Re:Zero will be nominated for even more awards, such as Anime of the Year.
