House of the Dragon Season 3 has officially begun, and its premiere has already introduced a major departure from the source material: Lady Rhaena Targaryen claiming an adult dragon rather than hatching one. In doing so, House of the Dragon appears to undercut one of the central ideas of Fire and Blood, while altering elements of George R.R. Martin’s established lore, something the author has publicly criticized in the past.

Spoilers for House of the Dragon and Fire and Blood (up to the events of S3E1) ahead.

Near the end of House of the Dragon Season 2, Rhaena was tasked with escorting Rhaenyra’s youngest sons from the Eyrie to Pentos in Episode 6. She began that journey in Episode 7, only to slip away from the group while pursuing rumors of a wild dragon in the Vale. Rhaena finally tracked down that dragon, Sheepstealer, in the Season 2 finale. In the Season 3 premiere, Sheepstealer is shown effectively adopting her and accepting her as his rider, cementing Rhaena as the replacement for House of the Dragon’s Nettles, who now appears all but certain to be absent from the TV adaptation. This departure from the source material gives Rhaena a different and more powerful dragon earlier than she receives one in the book (where she hatches Morning), but also introduces several issues in the process.

House of the Dragon Season 3, Episode 1 proves the prequel show is reviving a side of George R. R. Martin’s lore that Game of Thrones left behind.

The change waters down the source material thematically because Fire and Blood places significant emphasis on Sheepstealer’s rider, Nettles (or Netty), being a lowborn girl whose ancestry is never clearly resolved. That ambiguity raises one of the book’s most interesting questions: are dragons truly bound to Targaryen blood, or is that belief part of the dynasty’s own mythmaking? The matter is all the more interesting considering Nettles does not claim Sheepstealer the usual way, but gradually earns the wild dragon’s trust by feeding him sheep every day until he accepts her. The House of the Dragon Season 3 premiere references that dynamic, but reverses it by having Sheepstealer feed Rhaena instead. By making a legitimate Targaryen the recipient of that bond instead of Nettles, the show turns one of Fire and Blood’s most intriguing thematic questions into a more conventional Targaryen destiny story. The result is a dragon bond that is presented as more hereditary and less mysterious.

Dragons Aren’t Supposed to be in the Vale

The change also creates a clearer lore issue. In Fire and Blood, Sheepstealer is one of the wild dragons associated with Dragonstone rather than the Vale. In fact, Westerosi dragons from this period are in general associated with Dragonstone. George R.R. Martin addressed this broader point directly in his July 2024 Not a Blog post titled “Here There Be Dragons,” where he explained that his dragons are territorial creatures with lairs, not wandering monsters that freely roam across Westeros.

You won’t find dragons hunting the riverlands or the Reach or the Vale, or roaming the northlands or the mountains of Dorne.

“You won’t find dragons hunting the Riverlands or the Reach or the Vale,” the author wrote, adding that dragons in Fire and Blood generally do not travel such long distances unless their riders take them there. House of the Dragon’s decision to relocate Sheepstealer from Dragonstone to the Vale is thus impossible to reconcile with the author’s own explanation of dragon behavior.

Where Can House of the Dragon Go From Here With Rhaena?

Sheepstealer’s relocation is just one of several House of the Dragon departures from Fire and Blood that Martin has publicly criticized in the past. Replacing the dragonseed Nettles with Rhaena may not be the show’s most difficult change to implement, but it is still likely to have ripple effects. One obvious consequence that already took place is that Rhaena is now indirectly responsible for Jace’s death at the Battle of the Gullet, where she lost control of Sheepstealer. Nettles was present at the battle in the book, but she did not mess up in this way.

Spoilers for Fire and Blood (Nettles and Rhaena’s fates) ahead.

With Rhaena now paired with Sheepstealer, it stands to reason that she will inherit the rest of Nettles’ storyline, at least in broad strokes. That choice has a clear practical appeal for the TV adaptation, not least because it gives her some quality time with her father, Daemon. However, the complication is that inheriting Nettles’ arc could also point Rhaena toward a much bleaker ending than the one she receives in Fire and Blood. If the show follows that trajectory, Rhaena will ultimately survive the Dance of the Dragons as an exile, possibly after Rhaenyra turns against her over the circumstances of Jace’s death at the Battle of the Gullet. That would mark a sharp departure from the book, where Rhaena ends up in King’s Landing as one of the last surviving Targaryens at the end of the bloody war.
