Your pet means everything to you in Shift at Midnight, and they are the very reason you’re taking deadly night shifts so you can fund their expensive surgery. At the start of the game, you’re given the option to choose what your pet looks like, and you can pick between a Cat, Dog, or a Goose. While these are just cosmetics and have no impact on the game itself, it’s always a good idea to see what choices you can make before the grand and gruesome adventure begins.

Having trouble spotting doppelgangers in Shift at Midnight? These tips will help you catch them before they leave your shop.
All Pets in Shift at Midnight
You can choose from the following pets at the start of Shift at Midnight:
Dog (You can choose between a large or small breed).
Cat (You can have an orange-colored cat).
Goose (There’s just the one goose).
Your pet choice doesn’t affect the game. No matter which pet you pick, the story, encounters, monsters, and endings all stay the same. Your pet is simply a cosmetic choice.
Do Different Pets Have Different Treatment Costs?
Every pet has the same treatment cost. Your choice at the start of the game doesn’t change how much money you’ll need.
The total treatment cost is $310 regardless of the pet you picked. After your third shift, you’ll pay $20, followed by another $40 after the sixth shift. Once that’s done, your pet starts feeling better and even visits the shop during the next shift. Unfortunately, the improvement doesn’t last. After your ninth shift, the vet tells you that the surgery is now urgent and you’ll need to come up with another $250 before the final night.
How to Save Your Pet in Shift at Midnight
The money has to come from your personal funds, so every dollar matters. You will receive 10% commission from your sales each shift. It’s also a good idea to spin the lottery wheel in the break room before starting work for a chance at extra cash. Just as importantly, avoid killing innocent customers, as the penalty will take a big chunk out of your personal funds.

If you manage to save the required amount by the end of your 12th shift, you can pay for the surgery yourself and unlock the True Ending. If you don’t have enough money, you’ll be given a choice. You can ask Sheriff Clyde to cover the cost, which saves your pet but leads to the Grave Decision ending. Or you can refuse his help, which keeps Clyde alive but results in the Empty Home ending.
