1047 Games, the developer behind titles like Empulse and the Splitgate series, has announced that it is ending development of two of its games. The team has apologized for the move, but it seems that there was no other way forward for the Splitgate studio.

The Splitgate series has had a difficult time since the first game released, which was also the studio’s very first game. Splitgate is an FPS inspired by Valve’s Portal series, and combined combat compared to titles like Fortnite, but with portal mechanics. The game saw short-lived success when it launched its beta in 2021, but due to a sudden crush of players, its servers struggled to meet the demand. Since then, the developer has gone on to develop Splitgate 2 and new IP Empulse.

1047 Games Is Ending Development of Two Games

Now, on its official social media channels, 1047 Games has announced that the development of both Splitgate: Arena Reloaded and Empulse is coming to an end. The team provided an explanation for the move, stating that the cost of the dedicated servers simply couldn’t be met by the games’ revenue. The developer has apparently been shouldering the cost, but can no longer afford to do so. As a result, the dedicated servers for the games will be shut down beginning on September 3.

While this is unfortunate for fans of Splitgate: Arena Reloaded and Empulse, the developer shared some good news, as well. Similar to its move with the original Splitgate, Empulse and Splitgate: Arena Reloaded will remain playable via peer-to-peer servers. It says that players can host matches, find games, and play together “forever” via this system. Titanfall-inspired Empulse will get one more map before it wraps up development, and the price will be reduced. This is not only good for fans of the games, but also a step in the right direction for the ongoing movement to keep games from becoming permanently unplayable after development comes to an end.

Sadly, things have not been smooth for 1047 Games for much of its existence. While some praised the original Splitgate for its unique mechanics, the game was ultimately discontinued in favor of Splitgate: Arena Reloaded (previously Splitgate 2). That game launched in 2025, but wasn’t received well, with the team deciding to roll it back into a beta rebuild while cutting staff. However, after its release saw around 25,000 simultaneous players, its numbers crashed, and the title hasn’t seen more than 1,000 concurrent players since February 2026. Meanwhile, Empulse released less than three months prior to the announcement that its dedicated servers would be shut down and development ended.

Although the games released by 1047 Games so far are no longer in development, the studio isn’t shutting down. The shared social media message explained that the studio’s focus will change after years of working on live service games, though it didn’t hint at what it might create next. The co-founders closed out the message by thanking the players and those who worked on the game for the studio’s last ten years.
