For Jake Reiner, time has become kind of irrelevant amid the “living nightmare” aftermath of his parents’ murders eight months ago, allegedly at the hands of his younger brother, Nick.
“It’s been eight months,” the eldest son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer Michele Reiner told KABC-TV’s Marc Cota-Robles in his first on-camera interview since the horrific events of Dec. 14, 2025. “It feels like eight years at the same time. And it also feels like eight minutes, because every moment that I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality.”
“I physically lost my parents,” Reiner told Cota-Robles Reiner in the interview, which aired in part on “Good Morning America” Thursday morning. “And then Nick was arrested. And now it’s just me and Romy.”
It was Romy who phoned him with the news, a call that landed in the middle of a memorial event for a high school friend. Jake didn’t answer at first, but she called again immediately, and he picked up.
“I knew at that point that something was wrong,” Reiner said. “Romy told me our dad was dead, and then she said, ‘I can’t find mom.’ I immediately went into shock.”
Rob and Michele, ages 78 and 68, had been found dead with knife wounds in their Los Angeles mansion on a Sunday afternoon. Their son Nick was arrested hours later and has been jailed ever since, charged with murdering his parents after lying in wait. He has pleaded not guilty.
Reiner’s shock has given way to anger, he said, but he is focused on his parents’ legacy, such as the couple’s work with the Children’s Institute. The bereft sibling duo have stayed out of the public eye for the most part since releasing a statement a few days after their parents’ murders expressing “unimaginable pain.” Their first public outing came on Aug. 2, when they threw out ceremonial first pitches at the Los Angeles Dodgers game against the Boston Red Sox, honoring their father’s lifelong fandom.
