10 Strongest Buffyverse Vampires, Ranked by Power

As Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s original opening narration puts it, it is the Slayer’s destiny to stand alone against the vampires, the demons, and the forces of darkness — but that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. Sure, Buffy Summers is more than capable of staking a freshly sired vamp that’s just crawled out of its grave, but not all vampires are reborn equal. Some vampires in the Buffyverse massively outclass the usual stake-fodder and pose a huge challenge to Buffy and the Scooby Gang.

Increased physical strength is certainly intimidating, but a vampire might also be considered stronger than the rest if they possess a unique ability or skill or because they have been enhanced by some mystical ritual or procedure. Others have simply lived so long that they have picked up a few handy tricks and cheat codes along the way. And some, meanwhile, are just naturally bigger and badder. Whatever the reason for their inclusion, these 10 vampires are strong enough to make even a Slayer think twice.

Luke Was Imbued With Borrowed Power

Luke has the honor of being Buffy’s first real opponent after her move to Sunnydale as he features in the show’s pilot two-parter, “Welcome to the Hellmouth/The Harvest.” Although this was his only Buffyverse appearance, Luke was at least 150 years old and had been the Master’s most loyal acolyte all that time, meaning he likely had a long history with the Whirlwind.

While Luke was tough enough on his own — he hadn’t failed to kill a target since 1843 — he was extra souped-up during “The Harvest” when he became a vessel for the Master’s power, which imbued him with greater strength than the average vamp. Luke may have been physically strong, but it was his lack of intelligence that ultimately proved to be his undoing. Buffy was able to distract and defeat him by tricking him into thinking it was sunrise, despite it being nine hours from dawn.

James Was (Briefly) Completely Invincible

When Buffyverse fans discuss the strongest vampires in the franchise, they often overlook James, despite him being the only known recipient of a mystical medical procedure that literally made him unstoppable. However, it was only for a brief time. Appearing in Angel Season 3 episode “Heartthrob,” James went to a demon doctor who specializes in performing a rare operation: the surgical removal of a vampire’s heart.

Once James’ heart is removed, he becomes invulnerable to stakes and sunlight, but the catch is that he will only survive for six hours after the operation. James underwent the procedure to be strong enough to kill Angel, who had staked James’ lover, Elisabeth. Unfortunately for James, he was unable to defeat Angel before his time ran out. For a short while, though, James was truly invincible.

Dracula’s Special Skills Made Him Unkillable

Dracula is usually depicted as the biggest, baddest vampire of them all, but in the Buffyverse, he’s viewed with disdain by his fellow undead for being a “glory hound” who sought fame and notoriety. A sell-out he may be, but Dracula still proves to be a considerable threat to the Slayer when he arrives in Sunnydale in “Buffy vs. Dracula.”

Like the Master, Dracula possesses hypnotic qualities, but the Count also has the charisma to back it up; he is able to immediately bend Xander to his will and even somewhat seduce Buffy. What’s most impressive about Dracula, though, is his command of magic, an unusual trait for a vampire. Thanks to his vast shapeshifting abilities, Dracula is almost impossible to stake, as he can simply transform into a cloud of ash and then reconstitute himself. If Dracula had greater ambitions than simply coasting by on his celebrity and image, he could have been a serious threat.

Darla Is One of History’s Most Notorious Vampires

Darla is one of the many Buffyverse characters who became important to the lore over time. Although she is unceremoniously killed off halfway through Buffy Season 1, Darla returns to the series several times in flashbacks and is later resurrected to play a major role in Angel. Across her appearances, it becomes clear that Darla is quietly one of the deadliest vampires in history.

For starters, Darla is 400 years old, making her the oldest of the Whirlwind — the gruesome foursome comprising herself, Angel, Drusilla, and Spike, who caused untold havoc in 19th-century Europe. Though she may not have the same bloodlust as Angelus and Spike or Drusilla’s volatility, Darla’s cool intellect and total lack of scruples make her extremely dangerous nonetheless. It’s worth noting that her two deaths came at Angel’s hand and then her own. The only people capable of defeating Darla were her lover and herself.

Drusilla’s Mental State Masks Her True Power

As a former nun pushed to the brink by Angelus before he sired her, Drusilla is often defined by her “madness,” which can give the impression that she is less of a threat than her co-conspirators/lovers, Spike and Angel. However, this could not be further from the truth, as Drusilla’s unique psychic abilities allowed her to achieve a feat that no other vampire did on-screen: she was able to slay a Slayer.

Drusilla’s mesmerism is so potent that it rivals both Dracula’s and the Master’s own, as she was able to hypnotize Kendra into docility in the middle of combat and then slit her throat. Though Spike killed two Slayers off-screen, and the Master temporarily disposed of Buffy, this is the only permanent Slayer death depicted in the series. Let’s not forget that Drusilla is the only one of the Whirlwind who never undergoes a redemption arc, and as of the end of Angel, remains still at large.

Spike Is the Only Known Vamp To Kill Two Slayers

Along with Angel, Spike is one of the Buffyverse’s two most prominent vampire characters. As such, he’s one of the strongest in the franchise. From the off, Spike’s qualifications are clear: Season 2’s “School Hard” reveals he killed two Slayers in the past (Nikki Wood in 1970s New York and Xin Rong in 1900 China). No other vampire on the show, including the Master or Angelus, is known to have achieved that.

Spike’s strength of spirit is perhaps even more impressive than his physical strength, however, as Spike is the only vampire to actively seek redemption when soulless. He even put himself through a series of painful and tortuous trials in order to regain his soul. It could be argued that Spike’s passionate desire to pursue his goals is what makes him such a powerhouse, regardless of whether he is good or bad at the time.

Angelus Is a Fearsome Threat When Unleashed

Once ensouled, Angel typically exists in a constant state of self-restraint, reeling in his vampiric instincts to walk the path of a heroic champion. But when his soul is removed, and he reverts to being Angelus, he becomes one of the most dangerous vampires in the Buffyverse. While he is no slouch in the physical strength department, Angelus’ wicked genius and twisted mind really give him a boost.

Whereas most vampires kill for sustenance, Angelus kills for pleasure, and he takes great delight in manipulating and persecuting his victims, destroying their minds and souls before he does the same to their bodies. At 250 years old, his kill count is higher than most vampires still alive in the 21st century and, when he summoned the demon Acathla in Buffy Season 2, he almost succeeded in bringing about the end of the world. At least Angel has made up for that by saving the world several times over.

Kakistos Is a Powerful and Ancient Vampire Lord

There are numerous vampires-of-the-week in the Buffyverse, but Kakistos has to be the most powerful of them all. In essence, Kakistos is to Faith what the Master is to Buffy: an ancient vampire lord who made it his mission to destroy her. Before the events of Season 3’s “Faith, Hope, & Trick,” Kakistos had tracked Faith down to Boston and murdered her Watcher, causing her to move to Sunnydale to seek assistance from the Scoobies.

Like the Master, Kakistos is so old that he permanently remains in vamp-face. In addition, his true name has been lost to time, as Kakistos is actually Greek for “the worst.” Kakistos has some unique quirks that the Master doesn’t, however. Not only does he have cloven hands and feet, but his sternum is so tough that it cannot be penetrated by ordinary stakes. He may have died after just one appearance, but to his credit, it took two Slayers to kill him.

The Master Is the Father of the Order of Aurelius

He may have been the first Big Bad that Buffy ever dispatched, but the Master remains the strongest regular vampire that the Slayer ever encountered. It’s still unclear exactly how old he is, but considering he was already permanently vamp-faced by the time he sired Darla in the 1600s — as seen in Angel Season 2 — he may well be pushing 1000 years old. Over that time, the Master apparently honed many arcane skills, including a deep knowledge of the occult, and mastered his natural undead abilities beyond those of virtually any other vampire.

When at the height of his powers, the Master’s durability, agility, and stamina were unmatched, and he remains the only foe to actually succeed in killing Buffy Summers (even if she got better). Likewise, as the leader of the Order of Aurelius, to which all four members of the Whirlwind belong, he is the grand-sire of many of the other most dangerous vampires in the Buffyverse, indicating that his direct bloodline may be the strongest. The Master is also the only known vampire whose skeleton did not turn to dust when staked, and if Buffy hadn’t intervened, he may have been successfully resurrected.

Turok-Han Are the Strongest Vamps in Buffyverse Canon

There’s no question about it, the Turok-Han are inarguably the strongest vampires in the Buffyverse, as this is confirmed on-screen when the First unleashes them on Sunnydale in Season 7. Described as the Neanderthals of the undead, the Turok-Han — aka “Ubervamps” — are a prehistoric race of vampires who have been imprisoned on the other side of the Hellmouth for millennia. In their first appearance in “Never Leave Me,” a lone Turok-Han almost managed to beat a final season-level Buffy.

In addition to vastly superior physical strength, the Turok-Han are much hardier than regular vamps, and it seems only a Slayer has enough muscle power to stake them. While they don’t possess much in the way of intelligence — it’s not even clear if they were ever human in the first place — their bestial savagery makes them a ferocious opponent. The First’s plan to conquer the world with an army of them would’ve worked if it wasn’t for the Scoobies activating every Potential Slayer at once. No matter how strong the vampire, the Slayer will always get them in the end.
