Updated October 4, 2026, by Mark Sammut: The Fall 2026 season has plenty of exciting isekai anime, including both sequels and newcomers. We will have to wait to see if any of them are amazing; in the meantime, I’ve updated this article with two new shows (My Ribdiculous Reincarnation and An Observation Log of My Fiancée Who Calls Herself a Villainess Turns Otome Tropes On Their Head), and also fixed up some other stuff.

Love them or hate them, isekai anime are here to stay. Nowadays, the genre produces roughly 30 shows per year, many of which rank as the most popular of their respective seasons. Re:Zero, TenSura, Overlord, and KonoSuba are a few milestone releases that transcend the isekai bubble, and they show how different otherworldly adventures can be.

With roughly a million shows available, narrowing things down to just the best isekai anime can be difficult, and your pick depends on whether you want to laugh, cheer, or live vicariously. While I can’t promise to meet everyone’s preferences, I’ve curated a selection of the must-watch series in what may be the most divisive genre in anime history.

Reverse isekai anime deserve their own article. Also, this ranking reflects cultural impact, staying power, and influence on the modern isekai boom, not just popularity at release.

My Ribdiculous Reincarnation Is Either Hilarious Or Hilariously Awful, With No In-Between

All The Isekai, All The Time

My Ribdiculous Reincarnation episode 1 ore meets goddess

As isekai anime are divisive in general, a parody with a bonkers premise that plays by nobody’s rules is the definition of an acquired taste. You either embrace or reject My Ridiculous Reincarnation’s wackiness, with no middle ground. Before anything else, we should first explain the title. This world’s isekai system lets spirits pick their preferred next life, but the most desired ones have wait times of thousands of years. So the protagonist keeps picking the lives nobody wants, like reincarnating as a hero’s rib.

That second life only lasts for a couple of minutes in a single episode, as My Ribdiculous Reincarnation cycles through different reincarnations at a quick pace. The show never stops for a single second, to the point that it can be downright exhausting to watch; however, the series gradually pushes the envelope more with each new episode. Seriously, this is the only anime with a live-action episode and a Minecraft episode.

.hack//Sign Is Influential Rather Than Great

A True Classic Of The Genre

.hack//SIGN

While far from the first to tackle the concept, .hack is generally regarded as the ancestor of video game-focused isekai anime like Sword Art Online. However, most anime don’t fit the genre, as they usually don’t center on characters trapped in a game. The main exception is .hack//Sign, the first anime set within this universe.

At its core, the story follows Tsukasa, a boy trapped in the virtual world of an MMO. While this premise might conjure up memories of dozens of subsequent shows, .hack/Sign has a wildly different tone than most of its successors. Moving at a purposefully slow pace, this isekai anime is surprisingly contemplative and mysterious, opting to ask challenging questions rather than provide satisfying answers. The result is a polarizing show that is ambitious but not necessarily all that entertaining.

GATE Doesn’t Deliver On Its Premise, But It Is A Fine Harem Isekai Anime

Welcome to the JSDF, Now Taking Applicants

A gate to a fantasy world appears in Japan, sparking an all-out war between the invading Empire and the JSDF. The latter repels the opposing forces and, in the aftermath, decides to send a group of soldiers into this new world. One member of that party is Itami, an otaku who eventually befriends a trio of girls who slot into fantasy archetypes.

GATE is an entertaining anime that tells both a standard and reverse isekai story. Itami is an OK protagonist, but the secondary characters really carry this series. His harem is filled with lovable personalities, and they make the show what it is. Admittedly, GATE’s reputation has been hurt by the fact that it is pretty blatant JSDF propaganda, and your mileage may vary. Still, it is cool to see modern military equipment taking on fantasy tropes, even if that stops being the focus in favor of the harem.

So I’m a Spider, So What? Is Brilliant (Some Of The Time)

Best Spider In Anime

Hey, not everyone gets to reincarnate as a powerful human with ties to nobility. Some folks must draw the short straw, and Kumoko gets the worst of it when she starts a new life as a spider. Yes, the poor girl is just an ordinary monster, albeit one with a pretty high power ceiling. Focused on dungeon crawling, Kumoko sets out to become her best spider self, all the while making a few notable friends along the way.

Spiders can be off-putting for many people. These terrifying arachnids in anime are certain to keep fans up at night.

So I’m a Spider, So What? is a show of two halves. Whenever Kumoko takes center stage, the anime is fun, light-hearted, and even quite epic. She is an awesome MC and carries the anime on her back. Unfortunately, the series is pretty evenly divided between Kumoko and the human characters (some of whom were also isekai’d), and the latter’s storylines and scenes are nowhere near as captivating.

My Next Life as a Villainess Is Still The Definitive Villainess Isekai Anime

The Most Influential And Beloved Villainess Isekai Anime

While it might not seem that obvious at a glance, My Next Life as a Villainess: All Routes Lead to Doom! is one of the most important isekai anime of all time. Similar to the light novel medium, this project helped propel villainess stories into the mainstream, triggering a new era of dominance that is still going strong years later. Nowadays, nearly every season seems to include one show featuring a woman reincarnated as an otome game’s female baddie, and My Next Life as a Villainess got the ball rolling in a big way.

With so many similar series, Catarina’s journey might not seem all that special nowadays. Like many influential anime, My Next Life as a Villainess is the prototype for the villainess subgenre, setting the basics that many successors follow. After regaining her memories of a past life and realizing she is a villain who will die sooner rather than later, Catarina sets out to rewrite her destiny, a process she accomplishes through her irresistible charm and positive attitude. She enjoys a bit of romance, builds a harem, and even occasionally shows off some cool magic.

My Next Life as a Villainess is just fun, and a lot of that comes down to Catarina. She is just relentlessly endearing, and she has to genuinely work to protect herself during the first season. The sequel isn’t quite as good because it lacks any tension whatsoever, but it is still decent.

The Rising Of The Shield Hero Gets Worse And Worse As It Moves Along

Solid First Season, Followed By Much More Inconsistent Sequels

The Rising of the Shield Hero’s reputation declined as its first season progressed, and the sequel only made it worse. Naofumi Iwatani is summoned to a fantasy world to serve as its shield hero, only to be falsely accused of a crime and then shunned. Far from subtle, The Rising of the Shield Hero’s opening episodes are purposefully infuriating and gripping.

They also suggest this is going to be a more mature and darker-than-normal isekai anime, something the series doesn’t fully live up to later on. Even though this anime is divisive, those seeking a power fantasy-style show can do much worse than The Rising of the Shield Hero.

The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic’s First Season Is Very Solid

One Of The Best Mentor-Student Dynamics In The Isekai Space

The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic follows Ken Usato, who is summoned to another world alongside two classmates. While the latter were picked as hero candidates by their summoning kingdom, Ken was just an accident, although he proves to be a valuable ally as he is capable of using healing magic. Before long, Ken finds himself under the tutelage of Rose, a terrifying leader who plans to whip her new student into a soldier.

The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic is a mixed bag, but the positives slightly outweigh the negatives. The first couple of episodes lean heavily into comedy, and they are consistently funny thanks to Rose’s intimidating demeanor and Ken’s hilarious reactions. As the season progresses, the humor gives way to drama, courtesy of a pending war with demons that is now in full swing. Although arguably better as a comedy, The Wrong Way To Use Healing Magic works well enough as an action drama, even if the animation could be slightly better.

King From Now On! Is Charming In An Old-School Anime Way

A Mostly Forgotten Cult Classic

King From Now On! starts with its protagonist, the unassuming Yuri Shibuya, having his head flushed down the toilet, an ordeal that teleports him to another universe. Before long, he finds himself crowned Demon King, a role that puts him at the center of the demon world’s strained relationship with humans. This bizarre start reflects the show’s direction, as Kyou kara Maou! often blurs the line between silly high jinks and dramatic intensity.

King From Now On! is a relatively old show that has somewhat slipped from the public consciousness since its original run. While by no means perfect, this 2000s isekai anime is generally decent, mainly thanks to characters like Wolfram and, yes, Yuri. The show does have some pacing issues and can get a bit formulaic at times, but it is worth a watch.

An Observation Log of My Fiancée Who Calls Herself a Villainess Turns Otome Tropes On Their Head

A Genuinely Good Isekai Romance And Comedy

An Observation Log of My Fiancée Who Calls Herself a Villainess cecil and bertia episode 1

Over the last decade, I have watched hundreds of isekai anime, and so many of them are just the exact same idea presented in the exact same way. For the most part, I like that idea, but there are only so many times you can watch a disgruntled guy reincarnate as an all-conquering god who makes all the women swoon before you start yearning for something a touch different. An Observation Log of My Fiancée answers that call, albeit specifically for the villainess isekai subgenre.

Instead of following the girl who reincarnates as an otome game’s villain, this story is told from the perspective of Crown Prince Cecil, a pragmatic prodigy who treats Bertia’s bizarre ramblings as entertainment. Despite having its share of tropes, this switch completely changes the anime’s entire feel, crafting a truly unique series in a genre with very few of them. Both Cecil and Bertia are great characters in their own right, and the Prince undergoes significant development as his stoic nature cracks under the weight of Bertia’s chaos.

Reincarnated As A Sword Is Way Better Than It Sounds

The Best Father-Daughter Dynamic In Isekai

Fran And Teacher Reincarnated As A Sword

At this point, isekai has seemingly done everything, at least when it comes to picking strange things for the protagonist to reincarnate as. Vending machine? Sure. Goblin? Of course. Hot springs? Why not! Most of these stories are duller than they sound because they often don’t make the most of their unique circumstances, instead opting for a fairly traditional journey. However, they can still be fun, and Reincarnated as a Sword is arguably the best “reborn as an inanimate object” isekai anime. Yes, that is an odd subgenre, but it has a couple of representatives.

A human wakes up as a sword in a fantasy world and quickly realizes he is quite powerful. However, every blade needs a wielder, and the protagonist finds his better half in Fran, a beastman who has led a difficult life so far. Reincarnated as a Sword’s brilliance lies in the father-daughter dynamic that develops between them, growing naturally and believably throughout season 1. The anime blends action, comedy, and quiet moments surprisingly well, creating one of the better-rounded shows in the genre.
