Once again, the Yankees’ season ends with a division rival partying at their place

As their division rivals popped bottles inside Yankee Stadium’s visiting clubhouse, the home side filled with frustration and sorrow.

“It’s just heartbreaking,” Jazz Chisholm Jr. said.

“We didn’t do our jobs, didn’t finish the goal,” Aaron Judge chimed in.

“They do a little of everything,” Max Fried added. “They put the ball in play, they get a bunch of hits, they run the bases well, play good defense, and they pitched. So they played a pretty complete series, and they beat us.”

All of those comments were delivered a year ago, when the Blue Jays defeated the Yankees in a four-game ALDS, celebrated at midfield, and boogied in the Bronx. And yet, they are just as fitting now.

With a 4-3 loss in Game 3 of the 2026 ALDS, the Yankees’ season ended with an AL East foe partying at their place once again on Wednesday.

The only major differences? It was the Rays who raged this time, and they were able pull off a three-game sweep.

“I don’t like that,” said Judge, who didn’t play this postseason due to a calf strain. “I don’t like other teams celebrating in our place. But if you don’t like it, you gotta play better.”

Tampa already knew how to host a boozy bash at Yankee Stadium, as they also commemorated a division crown there a few weeks ago. Like Toronto in 2025, the Rays won the AL East and earned a first-round bye.

The Yankees, meanwhile, began their postseason with a Wild Card matchup vs. the Red Sox for the second straight year after enduring an injury-riddled season. The Bombers swept that series fairly easily. But they fell apart against a tidier Rays team, pairing a handful of embarrassing mistakes with minimal offense in Games 1 and 2 before coming out on the wrong end of a contested Game 3.

The Yankees did put up some fight in their finale, as Ben Rice, Spencer Jones and Anthony Volpe — who had a two-run homer rescinded after replay determined fan interference — each drove in runs after the Rays scored. But Fried allowed one too many himself and four in total.

All came with two outs.

“We played a really sound game and did enough to win,” Fried said, “and unfortunately, I didn’t do enough to be able to hold up my end of the bargain.”

“As far as I’m concerned, it’s a failure since we weren’t able to get the job done,” added Rice, one of the few Yankees who showed up in the ALDS.

With that, the Yankees have now gone 17 seasons without a championship. That matches their longest streak since Babe Ruth led baseball’s winningest franchise to its first World Series title in 1923.

For some organizations, such a drought is normal. The Yankees, however, have conditioned their fans to believe it is unacceptable, that anything short of a parade down the Canyon of Heroes is a failure.

That won’t happen this year. Again.

Faced with that realization, Aaron Boone said he had just exited a “broken clubhouse” as he delivered a postmortem press conference for the ninth time in as many seasons.

“I know everyone in this room has real life things that are very real that offer perspective. And I certainly have those in my life with my family,” the manager said. “So you try and maintain that perspective, but when you pour so much into it and it’s your livelihood, it’s hard to describe how awful of a feeling it is to go home again.

“You go through a lot as a group and then it’s just a sudden end. It’s the worst fricking feeling in the world.”

Now the small-market Rays, who spent $228.9 million less than the pinstripers on their luxury tax payroll, per Cot’s Contracts, will be favored in the ALCS against the White Sox or Guardians. The Yankees and their aging superstars — namely Judge, Gerrit Cole and Giancarlo Stanton — will watch what is left of the playoffs from home while getting another early start on the offseason.

Plenty of uncertainty awaits the Yankees and the rest of baseball this winter, as the threat of a looming work stoppage hovers over the sport with baseball’s Collective Bargaining Agreement set to expire on Dec. 1. A potential lockout could cut into another season for Judge, who is 34 and also missed 99 days with a fractured rib this year, and Cole, who is 36 and made 22 starts following Tommy John surgery.

As for others, there are plenty of opportunities for change after Brian Cashman took a so-called “run it back” approach and retained a largely similar roster last offseason, only to end up back in the same spot.

Chisholm, fresh off a trying regular season and postseason, and Trent Grisham, who regressed on both sides of the ball, are impending free agents and change of scenery candidates, though they expressed a desire to stay. Bullpen standouts David Bednar and Paul Blackburn are also among the team’s top talents headed for the open market.

In addition to second base, center field and the closer’s role, third base is an issue complicated by Ryan McMahon’s $16 million salary, diminishing glove and paltry offense. The Yankees also need to finally find a competent right-handed hitting catcher to pair with Austin Wells, and it’s unclear how they’ll handle the remainder of Stanton’s contract after he missed five months with three separate calf strains this season.

While Cashman’s deal is up after the season, it would be shocking to see anyone else in the general manager’s chair. And even after another sloppy postseason, Boone could remain as manager. He has survived disappointments like this throughout his ringless tenure; did a strong job navigating the Yankees’ numerous injuries and a bullpen that required multiple breakouts during the regular season; and is under contract for next season.

Plus, he still has steadfast support from his players.

“I think Boonie’s been amazing,” said Cam Schlittler, the impending AL Cy Young. “I know every guy in this locker room stands behind him. I don’t see a reason why that needs to change.”

“He puts us in the right position to go out there and succeed,” Judge added. “Especially a season like this where I’m banged up missing 100 games. You miss Big G, Cole, [Carlos] Rodón. You miss a lot of guys like Trent Grisham and Cody Bellinger, who is an MVP, for a little bit. For him to manage it the way he did and put us in the best position to get into the postseason and get an opportunity to win a World Series, he’s definitely had our back and is the guy.”

Boone said his status was a conversation for another day, but it would be somewhat surprising to see Hal Steinbrenner pay two managers for what may not be a full 2027 campaign, especially since a lockout would restrict a new skipper’s window for getting to know Yankees players. And the owner can bake the team’s IL woes into any defense he makes of Boone or the year’s shortcomings.

But there is certainly public pressure for new voices, and the Yankees could alter their coaching staff like they did after last year’s letdown.

One coach they’d like to keep is Matt Blake. The interest is mutual. Another impending free agent, the pitching guru oversaw one of baseball’s best rotations and that aforementioned surprisingly successful bullpen. Valued catching director Tanner Swanson’s contract is also up.

Those are all matters for another day, though.

For now, the Yankees can only lament another premature end. They can only reflect on why, time and time again, a roster that does enough from March through September falls short in October, or why their years-long reputation for poor play under bright lights persists.

If those issues do not get corrected, there will be more wallowing over early exits, and more Yankee Stadium parties that the home team isn’t invited to.

“We gotta be better,” Judge said. “None of us are satisfied.”
