Sega Genesis Gets 3 New Games Packed in One Mega Cartridge

The Eggcellent Dizzy Collection is confirmed for a 2027 release as a physical Sega Genesis cartridge featuring three games: Dizzy the Adventurer, Go! Dizzy Go!, and Panic! Dizzy. The franchise began with small indie games in 1987 and is considered one of the most influential in British video game history. Now, as the Dizzy series approaches its 40th anniversary, its original creators plan to bring it to the Sega Genesis in a special physical release.

Developers Philip and Andrew Oliver, known as the Oliver Twins, recently announced plans to return to the Dizzy franchise. One of their first moves was to unveil Ultra Dizzy, a brand-new installment with no release date at the time of writing. The brothers have also revisited several well-known older games and spin-offs, bringing them together in one premium package for Sega Genesis fans.

The Oliver Twins have announced that a Kickstarter campaign will soon launch to help fund the Eggcellent Dizzy Collection. The package features a 2D platformer called Dizzy the Adventurer, also known as Prince of the Yolkfolk, a Pac-Man-style maze game called Go! Dizzy Go!, and a retro puzzle game called Panic! Dizzy. The first two games had already been released in the past, but Panic! Dizzy is an unreleased NES game that was originally made in 1992.

Based on the trailers for the Eggcellent Dizzy Collection, Dizzy the Adventurer and Go! Dizzy Go! appear to have received visual enhancements, though it remains unclear whether their gameplay has also been changed or improved. What’s certain is that both classic 2D games look much sharper and more detailed. However, there is one detail that retro game collectors may want to consider before purchasing the Eggcellent Dizzy Collection.

New Dizzy Games Come with a Catch

The Oliver Twins confirmed that they used generative AI to develop Ultra Dizzy. During the game’s reveal, one brother described it as “100% my work at a computer using some AI” (via The Retro Hour). This raises the possibility that some visual enhancements in the Eggcellent Dizzy Collection also use AI tools. The brothers describe AI as “another creative tool” that, “in the right hands,” can create things “impossible to create any other way.” However, amid ongoing controversies over generative AI in game development, its impact on the upcoming Dizzy release remains to be seen.

At the time of writing, the Eggcellent Dizzy Collection for the Sega Genesis has no specific release date, but the Oliver Twins plan to launch it in 2027 to celebrate the franchise’s 40th anniversary. Pricing details are also unavailable, and fans will likely have to wait for the Kickstarter campaign to launch for more information.
