“We’ll Pay You Back for What You Did to Us”
Gyutaro to Tengen Uzui
Manga: Chapter 88
Arc: Entertainment District Arc
When Gyutaro fought Tengen Uzui after the latter beheaded Daki, he vowed to exact revenge on the demon slayer. In his enraged state, he screamed:
I’m gonna collect what’s due. We’ll pay you back for what you did to us! And as you lie dying, don’t forget… that it was Gyutaro who sent you to the afterlife!
While Gyutaro’s words reflected his emotional state at the time, once the battle ended, it was finally revealed that it also underscored something far more sinister, too. The brother-sister duo had been ostracized and bullied by society for most of their early human lives. The wounds inflicted on their bodies and souls have lived with them even after they turned into demons.
Gyutaro’s quote reflects his deep-rooted, vengeful nature, shaped by those cruel experiences, which drives him to exact revenge by slaughtering every human he crosses paths with. He feels his cruelty towards humans is justified since they abandoned and tortured them until he lived.

“Until You Die, You Haven’t Lost”
Kaigaku to Zenitsu
Manga: Chapter 145
Arc: Infinity Castle Arc
Zenitsu and Kaigaku’s fight in the Infinity Castle was one of the most intense battles in the entire series. The two had trained together under the same master, and Jigoro Kuwajima’s death because of Kaigaku’s decisions had left Zenitsu heartbroken and furious. As he pushed for an explanation, Gyutaro and Daki’s replacement in the Twelve Kizuki revealed how he had unknowingly run into Kokushibo one evening.
In order to save his life, he accepted the offer to become a demon and betray the ideals instilled by his master. He justified it by saying:
“Until you die, you haven’t lost. You may rub your face in the dirt, you may lose your home or drink muddy water, people may curse you for stealing money, but as long as you live on, you can win someday. You will win. I have moved forward with that belief.”
Out of context, Kaigaku’s words can sound motivational, but with the right context, they reveal a twisted survivalist mindset. For him, every human being he ever met was just a pawn to be sacrificed for his survival and power. Kaigaku never regretted playing a major role in the deaths of several innocent people. It was almost as if he were a demon even before Kokushibo turned him into one.

“I Truly Believe That Humans Are Pathetic”
Doma to Inosuke
Manga: Chapter 161
Arc: Infinity Castle Arc
In the Infinity Castle, when Inosuke confronted Doma, he was overcome by emotions. Realizing that he was facing someone who killed his mother and friends made him tremble with rage and grief. When he told the demon that he would not only kill him but show him what true hell is like, Doma scoffed at his remarks.
In his typical cold and mocking tone, he said:
“The reality is that even those who live upright and good lives meet with misfortune, while the wicked act as they please. They enjoy themselves and live life to the fullest. The idea of divine punishment is a joke. Wicked people going to hell after death? If humans didn’t think like that, people with weak spirits couldn’t keep going, right? I truly believe that humans are pathetic.”
Doma was being honest like always. His ungodly comments reveal that he truly looked down on human beings. For him, they meant nothing more than animals to be slaughtered and devoured.

“Why in the World Was I Ever Born?”
Kokushibo Reminiscing About Yoriichi
Manga: Chapter 178
Arc: Infinity Castle Arc
Kokushibo was once one of the strongest swordsmen of his generation, but his drive for creating a lasting legacy, coupled with his desire to surpass his brother by perfecting his technique, pushed him to become a demon. But despite giving his all, he still felt a deep emptiness and could not make peace with the fact that Yoriichi’s prodigious talent transcended everything he had ever achieved.
In his last moments, he looked back at his life and regretfully admitted:
“I could never grab hold of anything. Anything at all. I abandoned my home. I abandoned my wife and children. I abandoned my humanity. I cut down my descendants and abandoned being a samurai. But even all that wasn’t enough? You said that those who master their paths all reach the same place. But I never did. I could not see the same world that you did. Why could I not leave anything behind? Why could I not become someone known? Why are we so different? Why in the world was I ever born? Tell me… Yoriichi.”
As Kokushibo’s body disintegrated and disappeared, Yoriichi’s flute was found in his kimono. He had kept it as a memento all these centuries. His last words carry deep sadness and regret, which also reveal the frightening reality of being a demon. The powers that he had amassed in all these centuries eventually meant nothing, and it broke Kokushibo.

“I Only Despise the Weak”
Akaza to Tanjiro
Manga: Chapter 148
Arc: Infinity Castle Arc
Ever since Akaza killed Kyojuro, Tanjiro has been waiting for the day when he would finally get to confront the demon for his crimes. He eventually gets his wish fulfilled when he meets the Upper-Rank Three in the Infinity Castle. During the battle, when Akaza starts mocking Rengoku, it upsets Tanjiro, and he pushes back on his despicable comments. Akaza argues that he is praising Kyojuro, but Kamado feels that the demon is just slyly bad-mouthing his dead comrade. Akaza defends himself by saying:
“You misunderstand, Tanjiro. I only despise the weak. I only spit on weaklings. Yes. Weaklings make me sick. It is the law of nature that they be weeded out.”

“And That’s Why I Eat Them All Up”
Doma to Shinobu
Manga: Chapter 141
Arc: Infinity Castle Arc
In the Infinity Castle, when Shinobu Kocho found Doma, she was shocked to find him eating a girl alive while the body parts of several people lay lifeless around him. Unperturbed by Insect Hashira’s shocked response, he introduced himself as the founder of the Eternal Paradise Cult. He proclaimed that his mission was to make people happy. Shinobu was understandably agitated by his remarks and tried to acquaint him with the absurdity of the situation by arguing that the girl he was about to eat was asking for help.
Doma smiled and answered, “So that’s why I saved her.” He then went on to justify his actions by nonchalantly adding:
“You know, everyone’s afraid of dying. And that’s why I eat them all up. Now they get to live together with me. Forever. All the feelings of my worshipers. Blood. Flesh. I made sure to accept, rescue, and guide them all to enlightenment.”
Doma’s terrifying words lay bare the apathetic and twisted logic that dictates his worldview. It should not come as a surprise that even other demons don’t trust him and see right through his feigned benevolence.
