The events of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 now officially take place in the past. The iconic shooter from developer Treyarch Studios was released in 2012 and imagined a much more futuristic version of 2025, but as the final mission of Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 takes place on June 19, it now means that real life has caught up with the game’s timeline, thus making it a game set in the past.

While the Call of Duty series has been on a bit of a rollercoaster over the last few years, 2007 to 2012 are often considered the golden years for the franchise. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare took the world by storm and redefined the first-person shooter genre, and was followed up by the equally iconic World at War. The years after that rotated between Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare series and Treyarch Studios’ Black Ops series. Each entry is often considered one of the greatest Call of Duty games of all time, but the series undoubtedly peaked in 2012 when Treyarch released Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC.

The reveal for Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 painted a great picture of the game’s narrative, seemingly signifying the end of the Alex Mason era.

Real Life Has Caught Up With Black Ops 2

When Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was released in 2012, its futuristic setting of 2025 seemed like it was a millennia away. Although there are a handful of campaign missions that take place in the mid to late 80s, the majority of its setting is between April and June, 2025. Call of Duty: Black Ops 2’s final mission, known as Judgement Day, takes place on June 19, 2025. As pointed out by CharlieIntel, this now means that the once-futuristic shooter is now technically set in the past. Sure, most of the weapons and technology featured in the game are still pretty far-fetched and years away from what the world has now, but as it is officially June 20, 2025, real life is now ahead of the Black Ops 2 timeline.

There are plenty of other Call of Duty games set in the distant future, such as Black Ops 3, which is set in 2065, and Infinite Warfare, which is set in 2187. And while Black Ops 2’s timeline is now a thing of the past, Treyarch Studios and Activision recently revealed Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 to the world. The next entry in the Call of Duty series will be a direct sequel to 2012’s Black Ops 2 and will be set in the year 2035. Two iconic characters have already been confirmed to return: David Mason, the son of Black Ops’ Alex Mason, and the villainous Raul Menendez, who is the antagonist of Black Ops 2. Very few details on Black Ops 7 are currently known, but there have already been a handful of leaks surrounding the game.

Earlier this year, a major leak suggested that wall-running would be making a return in Call of Duty 2025 after some Warzone players managed to access in-game files with the new movement feature. However, Activision recently clarified these rumors and leaks and stated that Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will have no wall-running or jetpacks. These advanced movement features are always a divisive topic in the Call of Duty community, but the studio did reveal that it would be continuing to evolve Black Ops 6’s omnidirectional movement system for the next entry.
