Summary
Shadow threatens to overshadow Sonic in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 faces the challenge of adjusting central focus.
Balancing new characters, Sonic 4 may need a spinoff based on Shadow.
The Sonic the Hedgehog movie franchise has proven to be a monster hit at the box office, with the trilogy grossing over $1 billion worldwide so far. A significant reason for this widespread success is that each movie has introduced new characters to keep the story fresh, while tapping into the video game franchise even further. This keeps things interesting for moviegoers, and pleases fans of the games as they get to see their favorite characters onscreen.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 introduced Shadow, voiced by Keanu Reeves. This proved to be a popular decision, as the mysterious character brought plenty of intrigue, which the excellent marketing and trailer only added to. However, the franchise now faces a problem regarding Shadow, which could prove to be tricky to overcome in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

Shadow Threatens To Become More Interesting Than Sonic
Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Might Have To Adjust The Story’s Focus
The big problem that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 faces is the possibility of Shadow becoming a more interesting and intriguing character than Sonic. It’s a nice problem for the writing team to have, as it proves that Shadow’s introduction worked well. However, this franchise is ultimately all about Sonic, with each story built around him. Audiences should want to head into the upcoming film to see what he will do next and how his character will develop, but there will be just as many who want to know about Shadow.
The mystery shrouding Reeves’ character adds to the situation, because there are still many layers to peel away in order to answer some questions. The portrayal of Shadow’s huge power also increases interest in him. He comfortably handles all of Team Sonic by himself, which leads to the titular character resorting to using the Master Emerald to overcome the problem.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was the highest-grossing movie of the trilogy, earning $478.62 million worldwide. This success helped prove that the injection of Shadow into the live-action film franchise was wise. Audiences wanted to see how his character would be integrated, and that’s something that the next installment in the franchise will need to deal with. Audiences will want to see more of Shadow moving forward because he’s such an interesting character. There’s also a level of recency bias with him, as he’s fresh in comparison to Sonic. However, shifting the main focus of the movie toward Shadow would be a risky move that the creators are unlikely to take.
Shadow Doesn’t Naturally Fit Into Team Sonic
Shadow Is More Of An Individual, Not A Team Player
Another issue that Shadow could cause in Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is simply what role he will play. Other characters such as Tails and Knuckles have already joined Team Sonic, building up a fun unit with different personalities and powers to ensure they can handle various threats. The natural way to move forward with the franchise would be to put Shadow in Team Sonic, allowing him to become a hero and tap into his popularity with audiences.
However, it’s not as simple as that when it comes to this character. Shadow isn’t a team player; rather, he thrives when operating on his own. This is why it would be smarter to keep him out of Team Sonic. However, given that the entire story of the movie will be built around Sonic, it becomes a challenge to bring Shadow into the movie. If he’s not working closely with the main character, it would be difficult to give him the amount of screen time people want.
Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Will Have To Balance Several New Characters
There Is A Genuine Need For A Spinoff Based On Shadow
Shadow being seen as more interesting than Sonic isn’t the only way he can damage this franchise’s fourth installment. The tradition of adding new characters in each movie will likely continue, given how Sonic the Hedgehog 3 ends. Amy and Metal Sonic are expected to join the cast this time around, which means there will be even more personalities and characters to juggle. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 will have to balance all that, and allowing Shadow to fall down the pecking order to be in a supporting role isn’t something many fans would be willing to accept.
It has been reported that spinoff movies for the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise are in the works, which could resolve this problem. There are many routes a spinoff can take, but having Shadow as the focal point would be wise. Giving Sonic’s dark counterpart his own story would allow Shadow to be the lead focus and gain all the attention. It could help develop his character while not forcing him into a box, or making him break character to be part of the main storyline in Sonic the Hedgehog 4.
Shadow will likely still be featured in the next film, but branching out with a spinoff would provide the best of both worlds before it becomes a serious issue. However, for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, Shadow’s character will have to be handled carefully in both spinoffs and the main series to ensure he doesn’t overtake Sonic himself.
