From the moment you wake up, this game transmits an eerie and melancholic sense of loneliness: It is present at every turn of the road, with every enemy defeated, and every shrine, temple, and dungeon visited. The worldbuilding in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild is one of the best ever created. No matter what you play after this title, you’ll know the difference between a masterpiece and the average title.

The beginning of Link’s tale might have happened way before the Nintendo 64 was released, but it is in The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina of Time when the Adventure and Worldbuilding were merged perfectly to create one of the most incredible games ever made. Every true fan of Zelda will go back time after time to this entry in the franchise and feel like they’re playing it for the first time.

T for Teen: Blood, Drug Reference, Language, Mild Sexual Themes, Violence

Horizon: Zero Dawn is one of those titles that you need to play at least once and feel the story as you go. No matter the raging giant robots, or the many twists the story has, what matters most is the message, underneath the surface of a devastated world, hidden in the remnants of those who are long gone. This game invites you to explore and comprehend a distant past, to figure out what is really going on in this dystopian future dominated by gigantic mechanical beasts. A true masterpiece.

4

The Legend Of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Top Grade, Even If The First Game Was Superior

Zelda games have this intriguing and marvelous way to trap you inside their story, even if the story itself is not directly revealed but spread around in little breadcrumbs. With Tears of The Kingdom, there’s an incredible and heart-wrenching tale to discover, and the worldbuilding is excellent, although not as much as it was in the first game. One thing is for sure: The Gameplay in TOTK is far superior to that in BOTW.

5

Fable: The Lost Chapters

An Underrated Jewel Of Worldbuilding And Classic Adventure

Fable: The Lost Chapters is the definitive game about the Hero’s Journey, a clear representation of Worldbuilding done well, and one of the best Adventure RPGs ever made. With all that said, it is true that it’s a game that doesn’t get any better the more you play it, and it is a bit outdated for modern tastes. Still, every lover of classic RPGs and adventure games should play it at least once, and pay attention to how the world evolves around them. The story of Albion is as fascinating as it is full of dark twists, and beings that are extremely hard to comprehend unless you listen to the whispers hidden behind Demonic Doors and well-placed lore entries.

Middle-earth: Shadow Of War

The Best Lord Of The Rings Game

From all the Lord of the Rings games ever made, Middle-earth: Shadow of War dared to risk it all, creating something really wonderful by twisting a bit the lore made by a giant like Tolkien. The game not only has the incredible and unparalleled Nemesis System, but also has an extremely polished Worldbuilding that puts it close to the top of the charts in terms of storytelling and immersion.

Red Dead Redemption is insanely good in terms of worldbuilding, and it makes use of it to the fullest, making players get absolutely immersed in a tale of revenge and redemption that they’ll never experience in any other western adventure game. Of course, its sequel is superior in terms of gameplay, scenario design, and graphics, but RDR is (so far) the best of the franchise.

8

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag

No Other Game Depicted Pirate Life As This Title Did

Assassin’s Creed Black Flag has seen a re-emergence in popularity ever since Resynced was announced, but it always was, and will be, one of the greatest Pirate games ever made. Its mixture of seafaring adventure, incredible battles, exploration, and the classic AC gameplay makes it one of the best titles to enjoy and relax for hours. The worldbuilding behind its story is massive, a work of art that considers tons of real historical events and merges them seamlessly with the action-packed story of Edward Kenway.
