5 Reasons Why Jujutsu Kaisen is the Best Anime of Winter 2026

The Winter 2026 anime season is a stacked one, featuring the return of hard-hitting anime like Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End, Fire Force, and Jujutsu Kaisen. The latter is a real standout even in a competitive season like this one, with Jujutsu Kaisen standing among the unofficial “dark trio” as a worthy successor to Bleach and Naruto. It’s no surprise Jujutsu Kaisen is the top anime of this season, with Frieren coming in second in the eyes of many fans.

Whether fans focus on the events of Jujutsu Kaisen’s third season or the anime as a whole, it’s easy to see how Gege Akutami’s creation has dominated this season. Arguably, Jujutsu Kaisen is the top anime in any season where it appears, with the arrival of a new season always being a big event. Its competitors are impressive too, such as Frieren’s charming fantasy world and My Hero Academia Vigilantes’ exploration of the fuzzy lines of hero vs vigilante. But it’s Jujutsu Kaisen that pushes this medium to a whole new level in Winter 2026.

Jujutsu Kaisen Has Better Animation and Flair Than Any Winter 2026 Anime

Frieren Also Looks Good, But Not This Good

Looks may not mean everything for an anime series, since this medium needs a good story and emotional resonance to actually deliver a complete experience. But if anime like Jujutsu Kaisen and its competitors check all the boxes for the content itself, then the animation beauty contest may begin. In that arena, it’s tough to beat studio MAPPA’s Jujutsu Kaisen, which is the best-looking anime in this impressive season.

Other titles such as Hell’s Paradise and Frieren are also visual treats, with stellar animation to bring their exotic worlds to life. That being said, Jujutsu Kaisen still has them beat with its fluid, energetic animation where not a single detail is left out. Each battle is a wonder to behold on the small screen, which is essential now that the much-anticipated Culling Game is getting underway. One related example was Maki Zenin’s solo battle against her entire clan, with her being an action star unlike any other as she fought.

Jujutsu Kaisen Has Strong Pacing and Constant Momentum

Pacing is more important than ever for the anime medium for many reasons. To start with, there’s a greater quantity of competition than ever, and every anime gets a spot on the major streaming platforms. That contrasts with the 1980s and 1990s, when there were fewer anime series and only a few channels on TV, so fans watched whatever they could get. Now, sharp pacing is important for titles like Jujutsu Kaisen to remain relevant.

These characters fumbled Jujutsu Kaisen harder than anyone else.

Jujutsu Kaisen plays this game well with its swift yet smooth and exciting pacing to keep the story moving at exactly the right pace. It doesn’t feel rushed or choppy, but it’s also not taking too many detours. Season 1 did have that baseball episode as borderline filler, bt that was permissible, and Season 3 did need one talk-heavy episode to explain the Culling Game’s rules in depth. Aside from that, Jujutsu Kaisen has better momentum than any of its competitors.

Jujutsu Kaisen is Setting Up the Best Tournament Arc in Years

Kenjaku’s Culling Game is a Breathtaking Event

Tournament arcs may not be compulsory for shonen action anime, yet they’re a beloved and familiar trope that can add much-needed structure to a story. Tournaments also add a charming sports feel even if it’s a matter of fighting with fists or magic powers. Fans can name the likes of Dragon Ball Super’s Tournament of Power of My Hero Academia’s UA sports festival.

Now, in the Winter 2026 season, Jujutsu Kaisen is the only anime with a stellar tournament arc to its name, in a manner of speaking. Viewers are pumped to watch Kenjaku’s Culling Game unfold, with the added twist that this isn’t some polite tournament with referees and prize money on the line. This is a villainous tournament, one rooted in brutality, a dog-eat-dog mindset, and room for the sorcerers to exploit one another as they add more rules of their own making.

Jujutsu Kaisen’s Main Characters Are Tested in Meaningful Ways

It takes more than a physical threat to truly challenge someone in an action-oriented anime like Jujutsu Kaisen. Such tests of survival are routine, so Jujutsu Kaisen adds another layer by challenging the characters’ own resolve and emotional state. These events are a rigorous examination of who the characters are and what they’re willing to do, and why. Jujutsu Kaisen did that well in the past, and it’s doing the same thing now.

The Culling Game is filled with many incredible Cursed Techniques, but these are the most unique of them all!

In previous arcs, Jujutsu Kaisen tested Satoru Gojo as a noble hero during the Shibuya Incident Arc, with Mahito challenging him to either fight at full power or hold himself back to protect the innocents around him. It was a meaningful way to truly test Satoru as an OP character and see what he’s really made of. The anime is also testing Yuji Itadori’s emotional limits as Ryomen Sukuna’s living vessel, a test that Yuji has almost failed. Most recently, Jujutsu Kaisen tested Maki Zenin as she took on her entire clan, revealing her as someone who’s had enough of her clan’s rotten ways. When Maki fought Naoya and dozens of others, she did more than survive a trial of combat. Maki showed everyone that she’s willing to stand up to them in the biggest possible way and burn some bridges to carve out a new future for herself. Maki is moving on, and no one can stop her.

Jujutsu Kaisen Treats Fans to Gutsy and Gory Plot Twists

Nothing Remains Calm or Predictable For Long in Yuji’s World

Gut-wrenching plot twists aren’t needed in gentle slice-of-life anime, but they’re practically mandatory in the likes of Attack on Titan and Jujutsu Kaisen. Stability and comfort are the last things these anime provide, and they’re the last things viewers would ask for. It may be fun to picture Yuji and his pals happily cruising through their teen years, but that’s only for fan art and fanfiction. The real story needs to put these character through the wringer and turn the story upside down a few times to keep viewers engaged.

Jujutsu Kaisen does this better than anything in the Winter 2026 anime season, and in fact, Jujutsu Kaisen outperforms any anime in any season in this regard. This trend seriously picked up in Season 2 with the deaths of the likes of Kokichi Muta and Kento Nanami, not to mention Satoru Gojo’s capture and Kenjaku’s rise to power. Season 3 is keeping it up as Yuji and Yuta Okkotsu go from enemies to friends, Maki takes on her clan, and the Culling Game gets underway.
