Final Fantasy 14 is heading to Nintendo Switch 2 this summer, Square Enix has confirmed during the 2026 Anaheim FanFest event. However, the highly anticipated Switch 2 version of Final Fantasy 14 will have some major caveats for players to consider ahead of its full release.
The Anaheim FanFest keynote address was headlined by the reveal of Final Fantasy 14: Evercold, the game’s sixth expansion. Set to launch in January 2027, Evercold will take the Warrior of Light and their comrades to the icy lands of the Fourth Reflection, a parallel shard of the Source world of Etheirys. Evercold will include a new Tank Job and a new Ranged Physical DPS Job, though more details about them will be revealed in subsequent FanFest events in Berlin and Tokyo.

Final Fantasy 14 Joins the Switch 2 Lineup This Summer
After game producer and director Naoki Yoshida previously expressed interest in porting Final Fantasy 14 to Nintendo Switch 2, Square Enix stated that it would soon be a reality. Final Fantasy 14 on Switch 2 will launch as a beta client in August 2026. It will have all the same features found on other consoles and on PCs, including cross-play and cross-progression between all available platforms. Access to the game’s beta version, which is anticipated to last a month, on Switch 2 will be completely free of charge. Yoshida then showed the FanFest audience what Final Fantasy 14 will look like on a Switch 2 in handheld mode. Despite being from a development build, the game appeared to run at a stable frame rate.
Playing Final Fantasy 14 on the Switch 2 will come with some major catches. Once the free beta period has ended in September, players will have to purchase the game to keep playing past what the Free Trial offers. Yoshida stated that playing on the Switch 2 will require its own subscription, independent of the current monthly subscription needed to play the game on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox. However, Nintendo made two key concessions. Though Nintendo Switch Online is needed to access various apps and online multiplayer on Switch 2, that will not be the case for Final Fantasy 14. Plus, players who have an active account via another platform will receive a 50% discount on the Switch 2 port’s monthly fee. Final Fantasy 14 subscriptions start at $14.99 per month before taxes are applied. Ergo, playing the game on Nintendo’s console will cost an estimated $7.49 more per month after the discount is applied.
Playing Final Fantasy 14 on PlayStation consoles does not require PlayStation Plus due to the monthly subscription. However, an Xbox Game Pass subscription is necessary to play FF14 on Xbox Series X/S, in addition to paying the game’s own subscription fee. Final Fantasy 14’s monthly subscription covers access to the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox versions at the same time. However, copies of Final Fantasy 14 must be separately purchased and registered for each platform.
Square Enix Has More Plans for the Switch 2
Final Fantasy 14 will not be the only entry from the franchise landing on the Switch 2 in 2026. The anticipated port of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will arrive on June 3, which will be two months before FF14 launches its Switch 2 beta. Given that Rebirth is a vast, open-world title that can be taxing on some systems, it remains to be seen how well it will perform on the handheld.
