Throughout the Chainsaw Man series, the protagonist, Denji, has faced a plethora of unique and dangerous opponents. Each of these imposing enemies pushed the young man to his limits, forcing him to adapt his mindset and fighting style to survive. By the end of the series, Denji had become an expert combatant, capable of handling situations that would quickly overwhelm novice or unprepared warriors.

Although the protagonist’s combat skills are undeniable, with several battles proving just how overpowered he could be, there were a handful of instances in which his strength had nothing to do with the results of a fight. Whether it was for plot convenience or just out of sheer luck, some of Denji’s most important battles were completely rigged in his favor, as his opponents would have absolutely won otherwise.

Denji, Makima, Power, and Aki are just a few of the great characters in the Chainsaw Man anime, and here are the basics on all of them.

After ambushing both Denji and Yoru while they were in hell, the Locust Devil began what would become one of the most chaotic and confusing battles of the protagonist’s life. The War Devil, despite being one of the most powerful demonic entities in the series, was quickly overwhelmed by the enemy, leaving the main character to face the monster alone.

The Locust Devil used its impressive speed to dodge and mercilessly attack Denji, ending with the hero losing one of his arms in the middle of the fight. Just when the villain was preparing to end the hero’s life, Asa managed to regain control of her body and helped Chainsaw Man reattach his arm, which was enough for him to obliterate his opponent. If not for the girl’s help, there is little Denji could have done to prevent the Locust Devil from killing him.

Santa Claus Had Every Advantage Against the Heroes

Known as one of the most deadly and mysterious assassins in the world, Santa Claus was a powerful woman whose various contracts with different Devils made her a massive threat to any adversary. Denji was a firsthand witness of this character’s strength, as she was one of her most difficult challenges during the International Assassins arc. Santa Claus was one of the killers sent to eliminate Makima, forcing the protagonist to face her to protect his boss.

The battle against this terrifying being was not easy for Denji, as her army of human puppets and the powers granted to her via the Darkness Devil shard she possessed made her an unstoppable force. Everything seemed lost, as none of the man’s attacks seemed to harm the rapidly regenerating villain. It was not until Denji was sent flying to a conveniently placed Gas Station that he could fight back, igniting himself in fire to counter the effects of the Darkness Devil’s powers and burn the woman’s wooden body.

Before the final battle against Santa Claus, Denji and his team were dragged down to Hell, where the imposing primordial being known as the Darkness Devil was awaiting. The creature revealed that the human assassin had made a deal with it to gain more power, promising to bring Chainsaw Man into the layer so the Darkness Devil could consume the hero’s heart.

Chainsaw Man Manga Ending Explained

The Chainsaw Man manga’s ending is weird, rushed, and feels a little unsatisfying, but carries more emotional weight than fans realize.

Denji tried with all his might to fight this overpowered opponent, but none of his attacks did any significant damage. The battle ended with Denji broken and almost dead, lying on the ground as the Darkness Devil prepared to feast on his heart. None of his comrades had the power or skill to save Denji, with the series heavily implying that there was no possible way for the heroes to survive this battle. At least until Makima arrives in Hell and relentlessly attacks the Darkness Devil, forcing it to send her and her workers back to Earth.

Makima Was Superior to the Boy in Every Way

Due to her status as one of the Four Horsemen, Makima was feared throughout Earth and Hell for her power and abilities, with only a handful of creatures in the entire universe being able to challenge her in a fair fight. Yet, despite her overwhelming strength, the Control Devil could never defeat Chainsaw Man, making her desire to one day possess his power only grow stronger. When Denji refused to keep playing along with her, Makima decided the boy was no longer useful, and tried to rip Pochita’s heart from him.

Woefully for the protagonist, the Control Devil had previously signed a contract with Japan’s Prime Minister so that every attack or action meant to harm her would instead be absorbed by a random Japanese citizen. This variable, in tandem with her outstanding regeneration, made her a virtually immortal opponent. Denji had to somehow convince himself that his actions were driven by the deep love he felt toward the woman, instead of hatred or anger, an effective but convoluted loophole that seemed to come out of nowhere.

Yoru’s Defeat Is Both Ingenious and Infuriating

Better known as the fearsome and determined War Devil, Yoru was driven by nothing but a pure desire to begin an endless conflict between all nations that would cement her as the most powerful being in Hell. The only obstacle in her way was the legendary Chainsaw Man, who had already stopped her in the past, thanks to his outstanding strength and ability to erase any fear from existence. As such, when she met Denji and saw he could not yet access the entire power of the Chainsaw Devil, she decided to seize the opportunity and defeat him.

Their battle was grueling, with both combatants receiving heavy damage and being forced to surpass their own limitations to just barely survive the next attack. Yet, Yoru was able to gain the advantage, dismembering Denji’s body and leaving him on the verge of death. Just as she was about to use her powers and transform the defeated opponent into her ultimate weapon, Denji managed to confuse her and claim he had won their game of rock, paper, scissors. While comedic and ingenious, this moment is just another example of the plot working in Denji’s favor to prevent his death.

Reze’s Training Should Have Easily Granted Her Victory

Trained from a young age to become one of the most effective assassins of the Soviet Union, as well as one of the most powerful hybrids in the Chainsaw Man franchise, Reze was sent to Japan with the sole objective of stealing Pochita’s heart. Her relationship with Denji, while complex and cemented in lies, was joyful for both, making the inevitable battle that began soon after that much more tragic. Besides not wanting to hurt the girl who brought him happiness, Denji was clearly outmatched by the woman’s combat abilities.

Seemingly taking place during Part 1, Chainsaw Man is getting its first ever video game.

Reze utilized her powers as the Bomb Devil hybrid with the utmost efficiency, not allowing her opponent even a second of rest before launching the next powerful attack. Denji could do nothing but try to survive, holding on to the hope that he could find a way out without having to kill Reze. As fate would have it, the fight took both characters to the sea, giving Denji the perfect opportunity to drag his adversary underwater, where her explosions could not ignite. Despite holding the advantage during most of the combat, Reze was ultimately brought down by plot necessities.

The battle against the Bat Devil took all of Denji’s effort to win, culminating with the boy on the verge of collapsing from exhaustion. Lamentably, the hero had no time to rest, as soon after he had claimed victory and saved Power, the Leech Devil made herself known, lamenting the loss of her lover. Denji had no choice but to face this opponent alone and heavily injured, as he had no allies near who could help him take down the upsetting beast.

Although exhausted, the protagonist managed to put up an admirable effort, evading several of his opponent’s attacks and causing some significant injuries. Yet, even when Denji pushed himself to the very limit of his ability, the Leech Devil had a clear advantage since the beginning. It took just one mistake on the hero’s part for the monster to take advantage and impale his chest with her tongue. It was right at this moment that Aki appeared, using the powers granted to him by the Fox Devil to devour the Leech Devil and save Denji.
