An overturned tanker truck dumped fuel on Rockaway Turnpike in Meadowmere Wednesday, shutting down all traffic on a portion of the road for hours.
The truck crash occurred shortly after 11 a.m. near the intersection of Rockaway Turnpike and Meyer Ave., just across the water from Kennedy Airport.
Photos from the scene showed the large truck lying on its side amid firefighting foam.
No injuries were reported, according to the FDNY, which rushed 79 firefighters and EMS personnel to the scene.
The FDNY reported the scene was under control shortly before 1 p.m.
But hazmat operations were continuing as of 3:30 p.m., according to a social media post from the Nassau County Fire Marshal, which also deployed a dozen units to the overturned fuel truck.
Nassau County officials told drivers to seek alternate routes Wednesday afternoon, with Rockaway Turnpike closed from Peninsula Blvd. to Brookville Blvd.
Full-size, 53-foot-long, tractor-trailer trucks are not allowed on New York City streets without a permit, with the exception of interstate highway crossings between the city and Nassau and Westchester counties.
It was not immediately clear Wednesday whether the overturned tanker truck had been issued a permit to travel on Rockaway Turnpike.
