Hulu has become home to some of television’s most successful and talked-about original series, and the streaming service has built an impressive library of projects across genres. From acclaimed historical dramas like Shogun to addictive mysteries like Only Murders in the Building, Hulu has consistently found success in taking familiar ideas and giving them distinct personalities, which allows the TV shows to stand out in an increasingly crowded streaming landscape. Hulu’s latest show is no different.
Furious, starring the talented Emmy Rossum, has already emerged as one of the service’s most acclaimed new shows, earning a near-perfect 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. The eight-episode series dropped its first three episodes on Hulu on July 27 before moving on to a weekly release model. Furious will release its Season 1 finale on August 31, 2026, meaning fans only have two days to catch up on the thrilling crime drama.

Furious follows Emmy Rossum’s Alice Black, a former NYPD homicide detective who becomes an FBI agent and begins investigating a female serial killer, believed to have perpetrated a string of calculated murders. There’s a compelling cat-and-mouse game between the ruthless, brilliant serial killer and the traumatized yet determined Alice, which feels exceptionally reminiscent of Killing Eve, though Furious presents this dynamic with a much grittier tone.
That’s about as much as audiences need to know before watching Furious. It’s deliberately better experienced without knowing where the story is heading, particularly because the relationship between Alice and the killer becomes increasingly complicated as the season goes on. The Hulu show is a lot less interested in asking whether an FBI agent can catch a murderer and a lot more interested in examining the people involved and the situations that shaped them, giving Furious a bigger psychological quality than its initial premise suggests.

It’s a Surprising Show in Many Regards, So Catch Up Before The Ending is Spoiled
The crime thriller genre has become increasingly crowded in recent years, and many shows rely on familiar combinations of weary detectives, mysterious killers, and elaborate twists. Furious has all the ingredients of that formula, but it pays far more attention to why these crimes take place than anything else. With considerable time spent on female rage, exploitation, trauma, and the psychological consequences of violence, the story has a refreshing focus and an enormous emotional weight. Its interest in Greek mythology, complex characters, and sharp writing further helps the new Hulu show stand out from the crowd, and it’ll no doubt leave viewers on the edge of their seats as the tension rapidly escalates.
Emily Rossum is particularly important to Furious’s success: she’s vulnerable, fierce, and completely consumed by personal conflict – the exact kind of character Rossum proved she could nail with Fiona Gallagher in Shameless. Alice’s history and fragile emotional state allow Rossum to give fans a character who’s equal parts capable, ‘damaged’, and difficult to completely understand. She faces an equally compelling, nuanced counterpart in her target, and the result is a thriller in which the characters are doing as much work as the central mystery itself. None of the show’s central characters are easy to categorize, and that’s the point.
Author’s note: If you’re unconvinced by Furious’s premise, it’s worth a watch for Emmy Rossum’s extraordinary performance. I’m a huge fan of her work, and I was completely mesmerized by her ability to be subtle yet still intense. Quincy Tyler Bernstine is equally brilliant as the wry Nora Washington.
There are uncomfortable connections at the heart of almost every relationship in Furious. Sure, its core mystery is familiar, which allows it to quickly communicate what kind of series it is, but the characters, performances, and themes give it an identity of its own. It may not have arrived on Hulu’s library with the same cultural footprint as some of the platform’s biggest shows, but its critical response and ability to say something new in an oversaturated genre confirm it’s Hulu’s best new series.
With Season 1 consisting of only eight episodes and the finale arriving on August 31, Furious is short enough to catch up with before its first season concludes. There’s no better time to find out what all this praise is about, and given its “whydunit” premise, fans will want to find out exactly what happens before they’re spoiled.
