Mario Kart World Easter Egg Lets You Mirror the Free Roam Map

A fun Easter egg in Mario Kart World brings the fan-favorite “Mirror” mode to the game’s free-roam open world, allowing players to flip the entire game. Mario Kart World served as the flagship launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2, bringing some major changes to the longstanding formula of the beloved racing franchise. World expanded the franchise’s typical races to chaotic 24-man contests, while also adding a fully open world that would allow players to travel from one track to another and find secrets along the way. However, fans have now discovered a fun little inclusion in the game’s world.

Mario Kart World is filled to the brim with loving homages to the iconic video game staple, packed from top to bottom with references and “deep cuts.” World’s expansive roster of characters features lesser-known enemies like Sidestepper and Stingby, Super Mario Sunshine’s Pianta, and even a cow as playable characters. Many characters can also acquire different outfits based on the Super Mario franchise’s past, like Peach’s Vacation outfit and Toad’s Explorer costume. Now, fans have discovered one particularly fun nod to a Mario classic.

A recent video from Mario Kart World shows off a fun Easter egg players can find when traversing the open world version of Peach Stadium. Players making their way to the top of Peach’s Castle within the map can then drive right into the massive stained-glass window of Peach. Players will then emerge in a fully mirrored version of the game’s world, akin to the Mirror Mode already existing within the game. The Mirror Mode will, however, only last for the duration of that play session of the game’s Free Roam mode.

The Mario Kart World Easter egg likely serves as a tongue-in-cheek reference to one of the franchise’s most influential games. The roof of Peach’s Castle is one of the most elusive areas in Super Mario 64, only normally accessible by cannon after obtaining 120 Stars and featuring Yoshi giving out 1-Up Mushrooms in the original game. The method of unlocking the open world Mirror Mode also parallels Super Mario 64’s entrances to different levels, driving into the mural similarly to Mario jumping into paintings.

Mario Kart World’s bold new direction has seen Nintendo experiment with plenty of new ideas for the racing franchise. The “Knockout Tour” game mode functions similarly to battle royales, eliminating racers who finish below a certain place after each different course.
