DC fans have an interesting new development to rave about. At least, all the animated die-hards who like free stuff and have YouTube accounts will be excited. We take the good news where we can get it these days, right?
DC has been knocking it out of the park in terms of animation for decades now. The origins of DC animation can be traced all the way back to the Fleischer Studios Superman cartoons of the 1940s. Throughout the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, cartoons based on DC Comics characters came and went—with Super Friends being the standout—but things really kicked off in a big way in 1992 with Batman: The Animated Series. Numerous connected series like Superman: The Animated Series, Batman Beyond, and Justice League followed, forever tying DC superheroes with animation together for generations of kids. Interestingly enough, it would be Batman: The Animated Series’ spinoff film, Mask of the Phantasm, that would be DC’s first ever animated movie. In the years since, DC has invested a lot of time and money into animated movies.

Batfans have a number of options to choose from, as the selection of free films includes Batman: The Dark Knight Returns – Part 1, Son of Batman, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero, Batman: Year One, among others. Several of these films are adapted straight from some of the greatest comic book stories ever told and are well worth a watch. Fans of both Batman Beyond and Batman: The Animated Series will surely enjoy the beloved Batman Beyond: The Return of the Joker, featuring a story that runs across the two timelines featured in those shows.
Other standouts include Justice League: Gods & Monsters, Justice League vs. the Fatal Five, Green Lanterns: Emerald Knights, and All-Star Superman. Fans eagerly awaiting the release of James Gunn’s new Superman film should take note of All-Star Superman in particular, as the film is supposedly heavily based on the comic book series of the same name.
Ultimately, DC lovers should take advantage of these free films while they can, because who knows when Warner Bros. will pull these from YouTube and have them return to their normal PPV status.
