Before Luffy, there was another user of Gear 5 in One Piece, and that is Joy Boy. Joy Boy existed long ago during the Void Century, as confirmed in the Egghead arc of the story. He was the previous user of the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika, and he utilized its powers immensely well. How Joy Boy ate the Devil Fruit remains unknown, but it is already clear in the story that he did, in fact, utilize this fruit’s abilities, and that he was the previous Nika.

With his abilities, he took on the Twenty Kings of the world, and this battle raged for many years. Eventually, Joy Boy lost the battle and died, however, his will has now been inherited by none other than Luffy. Fans will most definitely get a proper look at Joy Boy with Gear 5 once his own flashback begins, which should be at some point in the final saga.

Years ago, fans believed Joy Boy to be the first Sun God Nika, but it is now clear that the first Nika emerged during the First World, which was approximately around 3,000 years ago.

It was there that the Sun God Nika fought first, which means that particular deity was the first user of Gear 5 in One Piece. Very little is known about this individual, but according to the Harley, Nika went up against the Serpent of Hellfire and the Earth God together, and their battle laid waste to the entire world. It was many years after the destruction of the entire world that life took form again, and that is where the Second World, where Joy Boy emerged, took place.
