Amuro Ray is quite possibly the single greatest pilot in Mobile Suit Gundam history, and a Newtype prodigy who won the One Year War for the Federation by masterfully piloting the RX-78-2 – otherwise known as the White Devil. Amuro is so skilled, that the RX-78-2 couldn’t even keep up with his growing abilities back in the original Gundam. To call Amuro a living legend would be the understatement of the Universal Century.

By the time Amuro returns in Zeta Gundam, his talents are far above everyone in the AEUG, even his former rival Char Aznable (now under the guise of Quattro Bajeena) and Kamile Bidan, a deeply attuned Newtype piloting a vastly superior Mobile Suit. Between Gundam 0079, Zeta, and Char’s Counterattack, Amuro pilots some truly impressive Mobile Suits, which are all so much stronger due to his unmatched skills.

Guntank

Mobile Suit Gundam 0079

Guntank

The White Base crew had no choice but to use everything, and everyone, at their disposal to survive the One Year War during the events of Mobile Suit Gundam 0079. While the Guntank isn’t a Mobile Suit that Amuro uses often, he does occasionally pilot it in the original anime. Unlike other Mobile Suits, the Guntank is designed to be operated by two people, a major flaw in its design.

While Amuro uses the Guntank every now and then based on White Base’s needs, the suit’s signature pilots were Ryu Jose (up to his death), and later Hayato Kobayashi. Following the death of Ryu, the Guntank was upgraded so that it only needed one pilot. All that said, the Guntank isn’t a particularly impressive Mobile Suit, featuring major drawbacks like surprisingly poor precision and poor mobility.

7

Guncannon

Mobile Suit Gundam 0079

Guncannon

The Guncannon is a prototype Mobile Suit much like the Guntank, but unlike its brother suit, the Guncannon is actually fairly powerful and useful. The Guncannon also suffers from surprisingly poor mobility, but is extremely durable to make up for its lack of agility. The Guncannon is tough enough to survive a full-frontal attack from a Rick Dom and has enough artillery to rip through Zakus.

In Mobile Suit Gundam 0079, Amuro uses the Guncannon during the Ramba Ral arc to take out several of the Ral Corps. While the Guncannon is stronger than the average Zaku, it’s no match for the Gouf, as evidenced when Ramba Ral nearly killed Amuro during their second fight. While Amuro can use the suit better than anyone else at White Base, the Guncannon’s signature pilot is Kai Shiden.

RX-78-2 Gundam

Mobile Suit Gundam 0079

The grandfather of all Gundams, there’s a reason Zeon soldiers ended up giving the RX-78-2 the nickname, “The White Devil.” The RX-78-2 Gundam is stronger, faster, and far more durable than Zeon’s Zaku IIs, while also being advanced enough to keep up with Goufs, Gelgoogs, and even fight Char’s Zeong to a stalemate. It should be noted that a lot of the RX-78-2’s success in the second half of the One Year War comes from Amuro’s awakening as a Newtype.

That said, the fact the RX-78-2 was designed to get better with more use. The Gundam’s learning computer means that the RX-78-2 is always adapting to Amuro’s growth as a pilot, and Zeon’s gradually improved technology. In terms of weapons, the RX-78-2 is outfitted with a beam saber, vulcan gun, beam javelin, hyper bazooka, shield, and hammer, offering Amuro more than enough options for any encounter. The RX-78-2 was destroyed in the Battle of A Baoa Qu, but made sure to take the Zeong out with it – a massively impressive feat that speaks to Gramps’ sheer power and resilience.

5

Rick Dias

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam

Amuro in a Rick Dias

The Rick Dias holds the notable distinction of being the only Mobile Suit regularly piloted by both Amuro Ray and Char Aznable in the Universal Century timeline. The Rick Dias is a mass-produced Mobile Suit used by the AEUG during the Gryps War in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. While Amuro is initially reluctant to get back into a Mobile Suit following the end of the One Year War, he sorties multiple times in a Rick Dias when he finally gets back in action.

Like the RX-78-2, the Rick Dias has a wide variety of weapons to choose from, including a beam saber, grenades, beam rifle, beam pistol, and bazooka. The Rick Dias is used by the Argama for the entire Gryps War, ultimately reserved for pilots like Amuro who no longer use their own personal suit. Interestingly, the Rick Dias uses is Char’s personal Rick Dias, which he abandons after obtaining the Hyaku Shiki. As powerful as the Rick Dias is, Amuro is the main reason he has so much success when he does pilot the suit.

Dijeh

Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam

Amuro with the Dijeh

After his initial story arc in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Amuro eventually decides to start being a piloting again, joining the AEUG (albeit fighting strictly on Earth). When Amuro eventually returns in the second half of Zeta Gundam, he’s no longer piloting a Rick Dias, trading the mass production unit in favor of his most bizarre and overlooked personal suit, the Dijeh. The Dijeh is to Amuro what the Gelgoog was to Char, right down to using a naginta instead of a saber.

Amuro’s time with the Dijeh is short-lived, since Kamille and Quattro return to space shortly after Amuro’s final appearance, but it’s a powerful suit designed to thrive on ground-level combat. The Dijeh also stands out for being Amuro’s only personal suit that follows Zeon design philosophies instead of the Federation’s. Power-wise, the Dijeh is comparable to the Hyaku Shiki and Zeta Gundam, gaining a big boost from being piloted by Amuro.

Honorable Mention: Alex

War in the Pocket

Alex vs Zaku

Nicknamed Alex by the Federation Forces, the RX-78NT-1 Gundam NT-1 is the main Mobile Suit of the 10-year anniversary OVA War in the Pocket. Amuro never actually pilots the Alex, but it’s technically one of his Mobile Suits since the NT-1 was specifically created for Amuro to pilot during the One Year War. The Alex was built for Amuro, based on his specs piloting the RX-78-2 and his awakening as a Newtype.

Had Amuro actually gotten his hands on the Alex, he would have been able to sweep the rest of the One Year War without much effort, including Char’s Zeong. The Alex was designed to play off of Amuro being a Newtype, so much so that a non-Newtype piloting the Mobile Suit would fail to use it to its fullest. This is exactly what happens to Christina Mackenzie at the end of War in the Pocket, where she eventually gets the NT-1 destroyed during the anime’s final battle.

2

Re-GZ

Char’s Counterattack

Re-GZ

The Re-GZ is Amuro’s first Mobile Suit in Char’s Counterattack, and both looks and feels like the main mech of a Gundam anime fans never got to see. The Re-GZ was designed by Anaheim Electronics as an alternate, simpler, take on the Zeta Gundam Kamille piloted during the second half of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam. The Re-GZ is a high-spec Mobile Suit that boasts high speed, power, durability, and a great tool kit.

Unfortunately, Char’s Rebellion marked a turning point in Mobile Suit warfare where Psycommus and Psycho-Framed were becoming all the more common for Newtype pilots. Due to lacking either, the Re-GZ struggles to keep up with Char’s Sazabi, even with Amuro piloting it. The Re-GZ is ultimately beaten down by Char at the start of the film, and later completely destroyed by Hathaway Noa at the end of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack.

1

Nu Gundam

Char’s Counterattack

The Nu Gundam is Amuro’s ultimate Gundam, and one of the best Mobile Suits in the entire franchise. Based on specs and designs from the RX-78-2, the Zeta Gundam, the ZZ Gundam, and Psycho-Frame data Char leaked specifically so he could get a better fight out of Amuro, the Nu Gundam is an absolute beast. Strong, fast, durable, and versatile, the Nu Gundam’s weapon kit and funnels make it borderline impossible to put down.

Amuro performs so well in the Nu Gundam during the final battle in Char’s Counterattack that Char outright regrets giving the Federation his Psych-Frame data. The Nu Gundam ends up beating the Sazabi so bad that Amuro physically carries Char’s cockpit during the film’s climax. The combination of the Nu Gundam’s sheer power and Amuro’s Newtype abilities ends up causing the Axis Shock at the end of the movie, saving the Earth from being destroyed by Axis. Although not piloted by Amuro, the Nu Gundam most recently appeared at the end of Sorcery of Nymph Circe during Hathaway’s final fight with Lane.
