For the first few years of its existence, Call of Duty was known primarily as a single-player franchise. Then along came Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007, delivering a groundbreaking suite of multiplayer modes that instantly cemented the series as a leader in the online gaming landscape. Then Call of Duty: World at War introduced the now-beloved Zombies mode a year later, and the Call of Duty franchise’s penchant for three modes was kick-started.

There have been a plethora of Call of Duty modes over the years, and while none have ever been quite as renowned or prominent as Zombies, there have been some standouts. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s Spec Ops mode and Call of Duty: Ghosts’ Extinction, for instance, were both thoroughly enjoyable co-op affairs. While Zombies has remained a staple of the Black Ops series, Modern Warfare has continued to experiment with other game modes, the most recent of which was Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ mode, which debuted in 2022.

An extraction PvPvE mode that saw up to 60 players drop onto a large map, collect loot, and exfil within the time limit, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ mode offered a nice change of pace from Call of Duty: Warzone’s Battle Royale mode and the mainline entries’ fast-paced multiplayer action. Though DMZ is still playable today, support for the mode ended almost two years ago. But if recent rumors are to be believed, DMZ might get one more shot in the spotlight, and with the right changes, it could be the ace up Call of Duty 2026’s sleeve.

Call of Duty 2026’s Secret Weapon Could Be A More Tailor-Made DMZ Mode

Call of Duty 2026’s DMZ Rumors Explained

Long before Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 was even officially confirmed, Call of Duty’s 2026 entry found itself the subject of a slew of rumors and leaks. Back in December 2024, well-known Call of Duty leaker @TheGhostOfHope took to Twitter to claim that Call of Duty 2026 is being developed by Infinity Ward. A month later, TheGhostOfHope returned to claim that Call of Duty 2026’s third game mode will be the return of DMZ.

In the seven months since then, a wealth of rumors and leaks surrounding Call of Duty 2026 have continued to surface. The most recent leak, courtesy of @realityuk via @CODWarfareForum, claims that Call of Duty 2026 will Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, and that it’s making some big changes to Black Ops 6 and 7’s formula. According to the leak, Omnimovement might not be in Modern Warfare 4, while slide canceling will reportedly return.

But by far the most intriguing tidbit from these recent leaks is that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 won’t just be bringing DMZ back, it’ll be creating brand-new maps tailored specifically for the mode.

According to leaks, Call of Duty 2026’s DMZ mode might also include a social area similar to CoD: WW2’s HQ.

What Tailored Maps Could Mean for Call of Duty 2026’s DMZ Mode

For the most part, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2’s DMZ mode used repurposed Warzone maps. The mode launched alongside Al Mazrah, and Warzone’s Ashika Island and Vondel joined the rotation later down the line. While these Warzone maps are generally well-liked, their appearance in DMZ felt a little lackluster. Rather than feel like an all-new mode, these maps made DMZ feel a bit like Call of Duty: Warzone with bots.

Two smaller maps were made exclusively for Call of Duty’s DMZ mode, those being Building 21 and Koschei Complex. The former offered an intense 13-minute infiltration into a heavily-guarded research facility, while the latter delivered a sprawling network of underground tunnels to explore. These maps weren’t perfect, but they teased a much brighter future for DMZ, one where it’s given the chance to thrive by delivering unique maps that properly suit the mode’s premise.

If Call of Duty 2026 does end up featuring the return of DMZ, a handful of smaller, tailor-made maps could be just the thing the mode needs to finally stand out from the ever-looming shadow of Call of Duty: Warzone.
