Character and Vocation levels are just as important as getting good gear in Dragon’s Dogma 2, and if you want to get tons of XP for both of these in relatively short periods of time, you’ll have to fight a lot of monsters. There are two places where you fight plenty of monsters near the Checkpoint Rest Town west of Vernworth: the mountain pass leading to Battahl, and the Ancient Battlegrounds.
Both the mountain pass and the Ancient Battlegrounds in Dragon’s Dogma 2 are home to some very tough monsters, but if you can beat them, you’ll gain tens of thousands of XP and enough Discipline to quickly level up your Vocations per run.

There a lot of either unique advanced enemy fights in Dragon’s Dogma 2 or just straight-up miss-able secret boss fights. Here’s every one we found.
Mountain Pass Farming Route
I recommend being at least level 30 before farming this area. If you’re not strong enough to handle the monsters here, go to the Ancient Battleground instead.
From Vernworth, take an Oxcart going to the Checkpoint Rest Town. Tag the Portcrystal for fast-travel access, and make any preparations you need; I recommend bringing plenty of Roborants for both healing and stamina restoration.
Once you’re ready, make your way to the underside of the bridge outside the Checkpoint Rest Town, then go upstream until you reach a cave filled with Rattlers. This is where the farming route begins. Climb the rocks inside the tunnel, then exit from the opening up top.
The mountain pass leading to Battahl is full of monsters, including Redwolves, Rattlers, and Knackers. More importantly, there are several large monsters here that reward tons of XP and Discipline when slain, including:
1 Cyclops
2 Minotaurs
1 Chimera
After you’ve cleared everything in the mountain pass, travel back to the Checkpoint Rest Town and doze off on the bench near the Oxcart station. Wait for at least five in-game days before farming the mountain pass again. Rest at the inn if needed to regain your lost maximum health.
IMPORTANT: The Cyclops will stop respawning after three or so attempts at farming, and in my experience, you can only fight the Chimera once. However, the Minotaurs and all the smaller monsters still appear on my save file even after 10+ runs.
Ancient Battleground Farming Route
A somewhat safer alternative to the mountain pass is the route from the Checkpoint Rest Town to the top of the Ancient Battleground. Along the road and up until the ruins’ entrance, you can encounter at least one Ogre and an assortment of smaller enemies like bandits, Harpies, and Knackers. The Ancient Battlegrounds itself has a few Cyclopses guarding the ramparts of the fortress, and an Armored Cyclops can be seen fighting a lesser dragon in the vicinity as well.
If you go to the Ancient Battleground at night, you’ll encounter plenty of Skeletons outside the fortress as well. Make sure to crush their skulls after you deplete their health bars to prevent them from resurrecting.
After you clear the fortress, go to the top (where you fight an armored Cyclops and find the Black Matter maul) and make your way to the side of the mountain just past the walls. You’ll find a tunnel that leads to the Mountain Shrine. At the end of the tunnel, there’s a Golem that you can fight for even more XP and Discipline, and you can sell the Magic Medals it drops for some extra Gold too. If you go further up the shrine, you’ll find a Sphinx.
If you have the Dark Arisen DLC and want to level up your character for the expansion’s challenging areas, then you might as well just farm the Beorcans and other monsters in Norgan.
