The Switch 2 has an impressive lineup coming in 2026, and it will undoubtedly get bigger as the year goes on. Fans are already eagerly anticipating the first Nintendo Direct of the year, which should launch sometime in February. So far, the games that have release dates include Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, Mario Tennis Fever, and Pokemon Pokopia.

Upcoming Video Games Sequels We Never Thought Would Happen

Some game sequels that take so long to release that fans give up hope. That’s exactly the case with these games, except they’re set to launch soon.

Those titles all look interesting, but there are some others that don’t have release dates yet, beyond listing a 2026 release window. Whether these games will make it in 2026 or beyond is anyone’s guess. Either way, let’s go through a quick preview of what Switch 2 fans can expect from first-party and third-party developers in the next year or two.

The Adventures Of Elliot: The Millennium Tales

HD-2D Returns

Planned Release Date: 2026

Planned Systems: PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S

The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales is an upcoming top-down action RPG from Square Enix that uses the same HD-2D design as games like Octopath Traveler. Similar to a Zelda or Ys game, players will be able to traverse an open-ended map to fight monsters, dive into dungeons, and discover quests through NPCs. They can find and upgrade various weapons, and they’ll even get a fairy companion to aid them. If anyone is curious, there is a demo out for the game on platforms like the Switch 2.

The Duskbloods

Bloodborne’s Spiritual Successor

Planned Release Date: 2026

Planned Systems: Switch 2

The Duskbloods is an upcoming exclusive game for the Switch 2 that is being developed by FromSoftware. It’s only been shown once, and based on its description, it appears it will be a PvP multiplayer game set within a gothic universe, and it will have Soulslike elements. The design looks a lot like Bloodborne, which fans have been eagerly looking forward to a sequel since that game was released in 2015 for the PS4 exclusively. The Duskbloods may not live up to Bloodborne, and it may not appear to be the game most fans want, but it’s still worth remembering as FromSoftware rarely disappoints in a major way.

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave

Flaming Tactics

Planned Release Date: 2026

Planned Systems: Switch 2

Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is the next entry in the long-running Fire Emblem franchise, which has continued to support its fans since 1990. The last game wasn’t that long ago, Fire Emblem Engage in 2023, but for some fans, that’s already too long a wait. The game’s setting seems to have a Greek or Roman inspiration as it will involve coliseum battles, but that won’t be the only battleground. Characters still have a wealth of options in battle, from moving on the grid to selecting weapons to attack, so it looks like it could be another stunning tactical RPG based on the one trailer so far.

Orbitals

Co-Op Anime

Planned Release Date: 2026

Planned Systems: Switch 2

Orbitals looks out of this world, literally, as it will take place in space, and it will be a Switch 2 exclusive. The exact premise is a mystery, but two partners will have to work together to get through trials from flying around space on jet packs to defending themselves on a flying barge.

Upcoming Games That Take Place In Sprawling Cities

If you’re starved for games with a detailed urban setting, these upcoming games are set in massive cites that are ripe for exploration.

There are two things that will help set it apart from everything else that comes out in 2026. First, it has an anime aesthetic along with a graphical filter to make it look like players are engaging with an 80s anime on a tube TV. The game is also fully designed around co-op, so think of it like Split Fiction’s anime cousin.

Professor Layton And The New World of Steam

Layton’s Long-Awaited Return

Planned Release Date: 2026

Planned Systems: Switch and Switch 2

Professor Layton and the New World of Steam will be the next game in the Professor Layton series, and it’s been a long time coming. Layton’s Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy was the last game, and it was released in 2017 for mobile devices. For anyone who didn’t grow up playing these games on the DS or 3DS, the series essentially follows the titular Professor Layton and his assistant Luke on adventures involving some sort of mystery. Players can think of the pair as Sherlock and Watson, and the games feature logic and math puzzles to solve, which all lead into the main mystery. Not much is known about the latest game, but Level-5 is hard at work, and fans can assume it will have similar mechanics.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park

A Mouthful Of An Expansion

Planned Release Date: 2026

Planned Systems: Switch 2

Super Mario Bros. Wonder was released for the Switch in 2023, and it was one of the weirder 2D Mario platformers. It will be returning in 2026 with a Switch 2 enhanced edition called Super Mario Bros. Wonder: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup in Bellabel Park. The titular Bellabel Park appears to be a hub world in the first trailer, where players can partner up with others to compete in mini-games. One old course may be switched up to involve collecting points, for example. Whether the new content will be worth it or not is unclear, but the original game still slaps for anyone who missed it the first time.

Yoshi And The Mysterious Book

Another Bingeworthy Story

Planned Release Date: 2026

Planned Systems: Switch 2

Yoshi and the Mysterious Book will be another solo Yoshi game and the first one since Yoshi’s Crafted World in 2019. The game looks like it’ll feature typical platforming with Yoshi, but the art style looks remarkably fresh as a cross between stop motion and a hand-drawn style. There are some oddities that will switch up the gameplay, like Yoshi’s partners he can find. Having a flower on his back can help flowers grow by running past and kicking up dandelions, weakening nearby objects, like rocks, which Yoshi can then smash, all demonstrated in the trailer.

Mega Man: Dual Override

The Blue Bomber Is Charging Up

Planned Release Date: 2027

Planned Systems: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S

Mega Man: Dual Override was recently announced with a trailer at The Game Awards 2025, and it will be the first 2D Mega Man game since 2018’s Mega Man 11. Why it’s not called Mega Man 12 then is anyone’s guess, as there didn’t appear to be any glaring new mechanics in the trailer.

These video game heroes make 2026 look like a very promising year. Here’s who might get crowned the next big iconic hero in gaming.

Through colorful levels, players will shoot robots with Mega Man’s trusty Mega Buster, which can also be charged up. Mega Man did appear to shift his body at the end of the trailer, but his back was to the camera. This was probably a way to tease that there will be something new with the gameplay, but fans will have to wait until 2027 to play it for themselves.

Splatoon Raiders

A Mysterious Spinoff

Planned Release Date: TBA

Planned Systems: Switch 2

Splatoon Raiders will be the franchise’s first spinoff since it began on the Wii U in 2015, with the last game being 2022’s Splatoon 3. Based on the initial teaser, not much is known about the game other than players will play a mechanic, be assisted by a big robot, and they will get to explore a series of islands. Also, there appeared to be a fishing mini-game in the footage, although that could have just been for story purposes. With a name like Splatoon Raiders, Arc Raiders fans may assume it is an extraction shooter, but that hasn’t been confirmed yet, and the only real thing known is that it will be a Switch 2 exclusive.

Mina The Hollower

Delayed At The Last Minute

Planned Release Date: TBA

Planned Systems: PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Switch 2, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S

Mina the Hollower was supposed to launch at the end of October on a plethora of consoles. It’s the next big game from Yacht Club Games, the developer behind the Shovel Knight series. Fans looking forward to the game have probably played the demo on any number of services, from Steam to the Switch. It’s a top-down Zelda-like action adventure game starring a mouse, Mina, who can dig underground to solve puzzles or attack enemies. From a celebrated developer, it looks great, but the pullback is a bit worrisome. There has not been a new date announced yet.
