Diablo Creator Says Blizzard Must Overcome ‘Super High’ Diablo 4 Expectations

One of the Diablo franchise’s co-creators shared his sentiment that Blizzard must overcome “super high expectations” for Diablo 4, following the recent release of Season 10. The fourth entry in the beloved dungeon crawler series has seen largely mixed reception from fans since its launch in mid-2023, despite plenty of excitement behind the game. Diablo 4 has consistently pushed out new updates with its individual seasons, though the game has only seen one full expansion so far with Vessel of Hatred. Now, one of the franchise’s co-creators is sharing his sentiment regarding the newest game.

While David Brevik has not been with Blizzard for more than twenty years, his time with the developer left a legacy that would carry on to this day. Brevik originally pitched the idea for the first Diablo to Blizzard and served as both Lead Programmer and Senior Designer for the first game. He would later take the role of Project Lead for Diablo 2 before ultimately leaving Blizzard in 2003, now acting as the game designer and founder of independent developer Graybeard Games. David Brevik now has some words of advice for Blizzard regarding his own creation.

As reported by PCGamesN, Diablo co-creator David Brevik recently spoke about Diablo 4 in an interview about the franchise. Brevik shared that he feels that fan expectations for Diablo 4 are “through the roof” with regard to the content from the RPG series, given its rich history and popularity among players. Brevik also commented on Diablo 4’s release strategy for its DLC, with the sheer scale and size of the game making radical changes more difficult. The co-creator shared his praise for 1980 dungeon crawler Rogue during the interview, feeling that much of the inspiration for the original Diablo came from the iconic game.

Diablo 4’s high expectations come as the game saw generally positive reception from both fans and critics following its initial release. Diablo 4 saw several award nominations during the end-of-year ceremonies in 2023, being nominated for “Best Multiplayer Game” and “Innovation in Accessibility” at the 2023 Game Awards. The action RPG also recently launched its Season 10 update, making some major changes to Infernal Hordes and adding new Chaos Perks and Chaos Armor.

Fans of Diablo 4 were given some disappointing news about the game earlier this year, regarding its next expansion. A panel at DICE in February confirmed that Diablo 4 will be skipping a new expansion in 2025, with the next DLC not launching until sometime next year. The report comes as Blizzard had initially promised yearly expansions for the action RPG, with the game launching in 2023 and Vessel of Hatred releasing in 2024. Diablo 4 will continue to face its high expectations as one of the most recognizable names in the action RPG genre.
