Dispatch Season 2 Will Have an Impossible Choice to Make

The rise in popularity of Dispatch echoes the golden age of Telltale Games, with developer AdHoc creating one of the best choice-based narrative games in recent years. With Dispatch having completed its 8-episode run, many fans are turning their attention toward a second season. However, the effects of the player’s choices on Dispatch’s narrative create a scenario where multiple different endings can occur, setting a second season up to establish which of the game’s drastically different endings is the canon one.

Although Dispatch Season 2 hasn’t officially been confirmed, AdHoc Studio has noted that it is a possibility, and Breaking Bad’s Aaron Paul, voice of Robert Robertson, has stated that he hopes to do more with the character. Signs are positive for another season of Dispatch, especially after the game has far exceeded its sales expectations. It’s not exactly clear where this second season could take the story, but regardless of that direction, it will need to decide which of the first season’s many endings it will build upon.

Dispatch Season 2 Will Have to Decide On a Canon Ending

Throughout the game, Dispatch will ask players to make crucial decisions that will dictate which ending they achieve. In some instances, even a seemingly minor dialogue choice can have unexpected consequences and can completely change the outcome of Dispatch’s story. For example, players intent on leading Invisigal toward a heroic ending can fail simply by distrusting her just one time, making it important to consider every choice the game presents.

There are three main aspects to Dispatch’s ending that come together in Episode 8: whether Invisigal becomes a hero or villain, who Robert romances, and whether Robert kills or spares Shroud. While some of these components can be mixed and matched to a degree, others are mutually exclusive (such as Invisigal’s romance ending requiring her to become a hero). With all of these factors to consider, narrowing down the game’s potential endings to canonize in a second season feels like nearly an impossible task.

The Ideal Canon Dispatch Ending May Not Be the Most Popular

While it might not sit well with some Dispatch players, especially those who romanced Invisigal, the best ending for a second season is the “Didn’t See that Coming” ending, where Visi embraces her villainous side. With Shroud effectively neutralized in either ending, there needs to be a new villain to threaten the Z-Team for Dispatch Season 2. With Invisigal walking the line of antagonist, taking over the lead of the Red Ring after killing Shroud, it’s easy to see how a second season could follow an Invisigal redemption arc.

Even if Dispatch Season 2 follows the best ending, where Visi remains a hero and Shroud is spared, there is room for a new conflict to arise for the Z-Team. Perhaps Shroud escapes prison, or Robert’s relationship with both Blonde Blazer and Invisigal becomes strained, leading players down a new character arc for Mecha Man. There isn’t a perfect option for a canon ending to Dispatch due to the necessity of the game’s branching choices to have a cohesive outcome. As a result, a future season of Dispatch will have to do what seems impossible and establish the “correct” ending for the first season.
