Hot 97’s ‘Ebro in the Morning’ abruptly ends after 13 years

It’s apparently another end of an era for another longtime radio show on New York’s Hot 97.

“Ebro in the Morning,” hosted by former radio programmer Ebro Darden and loyal sidekicks Peter Rosenberg and Laura Stylez, is supposedly “done” after more than 13 years on the groundbreaking hip-hop station.

On Friday morning, Darden posted a cryptic message about the show on X, tweeting: “It’s done. More to come. #EbroInTheMorning.”

Rosenberg later chimed in, writing on Instagram that “it comes to a close.”

“Longest tenured morning host ever at the station,” wrote Rosenberg, who’s been with Hot 97 for nearly 19 years. “The future is very exciting but I’m filled with gratitude for the past.”

In a social media video, Darden expounded on the end of show, claiming that the venture capitalists at Hot 97’s parent company, MediaCo Holding, kicked him to the curb due to his liberal views, saying he doesn’t “capitulate well.”

“Look at all the major media outlets, man. All of them,” Darden said. “They all gotta fold up ’cause they all trying to renew their deals, their licenses.”

The DJ went on to reference MediaCo’s chairman Soohyung Kim, whose New York-based hedge fund Standard General owns the Bally’s Corporation, which was recently approved to build a new casino in the Bronx.

“You know those three licenses that they got here in New York City for the casinos? The guy that owns the s–t owns one of the casino licenses,” Darden said, “He gotta raise half a million dollars, bro — half a billion, excuse me. They need my s–t-talking, anti‑Netanyahu, anti‑government, progressive s–t out the way, bro. They need me out the way.”

Darden promised to share “more specifics” at a later date and encouraged his followers to subscribe to his YouTube channel.

Darden — who also serves as the Global Editorial Head of Hip-Hop and R&B at Apple Music, where he hosts “The Ebro Show” and “Rap Life Radio” — previously took aim Hot 97’s ownership when a shakeup in August led to DJ Enuff and TT Torrez leaving the station.

“I’ve been telling y’all for months — years — that the new ownership of the big legend, Hot 97, didn’t give a damn about investing in this damn thing here,” he said. “No new studios. Making cuts, cutting staff, cutting this, cutting that.”

As of Friday evening, all references to “Ebro in the Morning” had seemingly been removed from the Hot 97 website.

“While the distribution of ‘Ebro in the Morning’ in its current form is ending, Superadio remains fully committed to the Ebro brand,” the show’s syndication distributor said in a statement. “We look forward to continuing to bring Ebro’s voice and talent to the masses across new platforms, which we’ll be sharing more about very soon.”

“Ebro in the Morning” began in 2012, when Darden returned as the station’s program director and took over the morning timeslot after a previous stint on Hot 97 from 2004 to 2007.
