Ever since its introduction during the Land of Wano arc of the One Piece series, Luffy’s Gear 5 has become one of the most emblematic transformations in anime history. This whimsical and powerful form is the perfect embodiment of everything that makes Eiichiro Oda’s work so beloved worldwide. It combines the epic techniques fans enjoy so much with a comical approach to fighting that is rarely seen in modern Shonen series.
While there is no denying how fun it is to see Gear 5 in action, audiences are aware of the tremendous power hidden behind those bright eyes and permanent grin. Thanks to his Devil Fruit awakening, the Straw Hat Captain has become one of the most dangerous and mighty pirates in the world, proving his strength against imposing opponents like Kaido or the Five Elders. Still, many fans wonder how powerful Luffy has become now that the series has entered its Elbaf arc.

Luffy’s Gear 5 Rivals The Most Imposing Villains
Although Luffy had long been known as the user of the Gum-Gum Fruit, a powerful treasure that granted its user the ability to manipulate rubber, the true nature of his powers was revealed during the battle against Kaido. During this epic confrontation against one of the mighty Emperors of the Sea, the protagonist was able to awaken his Devil Fruit, confirming its status as the legendary Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika.
This meant that Luffy’s powers did not come from rubber, but rather an ancient Sun deity, known among slaves as the liberator and protector of freedom. The powers of this god manifested themselves in the hero’s Gear 5 transformation, giving the user control over reality itself, with imagination as the only limit to these abilities. While in this state, Luffy becomes an almost unstoppable force, capable of going toe-to-toe against some of the strongest characters in the series.

One Piece: 7 Strongest Straw Hat Transformations, Ranked
The Straw Hat Pirates have grown tremendously in strength in One Piece. These are their strongest transformations.
While the form has not yet been used in a serious battle during the Elbaf arc, there are plenty of hints at Luffy’s true power hidden during his previous combats. Throughout chapters 1110 to 1118, the Straw Hat Captain is seen fighting the Five Elders, the immortal followers of the Supreme Leader Imu. Luffy had quite a hard time facing these opponents, but the fact that he survived his fight against them all proves he is either barely behind the Elders in terms of pure strength or less likely on the same level as a single member of the group.
Luffy Has Yet to Figure Out The Upper Limit of His Strength
It is undeniable that Gear 5 Luffy is among the most powerful beings in the world of One Piece. His feats of strength and resilience go far beyond what a regular warrior could ever achieve. From beating Kaido to surviving an encounter against the Five Elders, the Straw Hat Captain has far surpassed the expectations of fans in terms of raw power.
Yet, despite how incredible seeing Luffy use this form in combat has been, there has not yet been a true opportunity for him to prove his true might. His first use of the transformation against Kaido, a former member of the Rocks Pirates and ruler of the Land of Wano, occurred when both opponents had sustained severe injuries. Luffy gained complete control of the fight after awakening Gear 5, but he was far from fighting at his best.

Eiichiro Oda Quietly Sets Up Luffy’s Next Transformation After Gear 5
Luffy could have another transformation after Gear 5. Oda has already set it up in One Piece.
Later on, he would go on to fight an awakened Rob Lucci, who was nowhere near as strong as to represent an actual challenge to the pirate. His final serious use of Gear 5, against the Five Elders during the ending of the Egghead arc, saw Luffy face several opponents, each with a strength and ability similar to his own. The series hinted that the hero could at least face one of the Elders on his own, but he was never given the chance, meaning there has never been an opportunity for Luffy to prove how strong he can be.
Nika’s Abilities Could Still Grow in Strength
Luffy has become a being powered not only by Haki, but also by the concept of imagination itself, which makes him a major threat to even the most powerful One Piece villains. The Straw Hat Captain can toss his opponents around like toys, bend the ground beneath him as if it were made of rubber, change his body into any shape he wants, and even alter the physical composition of the surrounding elements. His only limitation comes from what he can visualize.

Gear 5 is strong, but this new transformation is even more powerful in One Piece.
One Piece’s protagonist is the best-suited candidate to wield this power, as his desire for freedom and joyful personality help him do things that no one else in the world can. Luffy still has a long way to go before his power can be comparable to that of Nika, or even his predecessor, Joyboy. He might not be among the smartest characters in anime, but audiences have seen how much progress the hero can make the more he uses a technique.
A Small Detail Could Point to Luffy Having Already Grown
When Luffy first encounters Loki in chapters 1130 and 1131, the duo share a small conversation, which ends with the latter insulting Shanks. The protagonist, angry at his mentor being slandered, launches a punch against Loki in his Gear 4 state, which causes the Giant to become alarmed. It might be seen as insignificant, but the fact that a being as powerful as Loki, wielder of the legendary Dragon Devil Fruit, was sacred of Luffy might be a hint at how mighty the hero has become.
