There are 85 hats, helmets, and headbands in Ghost of Yotei, most of which can be found using the guiding wind or unlocked after upgrading Atsu’s 13 armor sets. However, this isn’t always the case.
As pointed out by one Game Rant reader (thanks again, Adam), there’s a secret Ghost of Yotei hat that can only be obtained if Atsu gets captured by Saito’s outlaws in Teshio Ridge. For that to happen, players need to die.
How to Get the Secret Golden Fire Hat in Ghost of Yotei
To get the Golden Fire Hat, players will need to get captured by Saito’s outlaws and taken back to their camp. To do so, they should make their way to the Teshio Ridge area and look for a group of Saito’s men. This doesn’t work with members of the Nine Tails, so players may have to spend a bit of time searching. Eventually, though, they’ll see a group of hostiles dressed in red, at which point they’re good to go.
From here, it’s a simple case of waiting for the outlaws to kill Atsu, which can happen pretty quickly when playing the game on harder difficulty settings. Once she goes down, players should avoid reviving and wait for one of the outlaws to move in and deal the final blow. If all goes to plan, a secret cutscene will trigger, and Atsu will wake up tied to a pole in the outlaws’ camp.
Once players regain control, they’ll need to spam the X button to free themselves, after which, they’ll be free to sneak up on and assassinate the two outlaws who are sitting around the fire. Now that the coast is clear, they can open the nearby purple chest, inside of which is the Golden Fire Hat. Interestingly, this isn’t the only secret Ghost of Yotei cosmetic. In fact, there’s one that provides a special bonus to those lucky enough to get their hands on it.
How to Get Kanemori’s Two-Faced Mask in Ghost of Yotei
It’s possible to play through Ghost of Yotei without ever once making use of the game’s camping mechanics. However, those who don’t will miss out on one of the most unusual encounters in the entire game, and also one of the very best items: Kanemori’s Two-Faced Mask. The thing that makes this mask so good is that it doubles the amount of damage that Atsu dishes out in combat. Granted, she also takes twice as much damage, but this is somewhat inconsequential when playing on the Lethal difficulty setting, where a single blow can often be fatal.
To get Kanemori’s Two-Faced Mask, players will need to get the traveling merchant to appear at Atsu’s campsite and then buy the mask from him for 1,000 mon. Unfortunately, the chances of the merchant showing up are fairly slim, but by repeatedly standing up and sitting back down at a campfire, players should be able to trigger the encounter sooner rather than later. Apparently, it’s possible to get the mask for 250 mon if Atsu declines the merchant’s first offer, although for this to work, they’ll need to retrigger the encounter, which is arguably more trouble than it’s worth.
