Gothic 1 Remake can be a challenging experience, and combat feels unforgiving at times. If you get the hang of the combat system, you will have a good chance of survival when battling against enemies, but battling requires a weapon, and you’ll need one fast.
When your journey begins in Gothic 1 Remake, you won’t have a weapon, and some basic fights on your way to Old Camp can be extremely tough. Thankfully, there are multiple free weapons available on your path towards the Old Camp that you can collect without putting yourself in danger. They are just hidden in some tricky places.

Where to Find the Shortbow in Gothic 1 Remake
Point Damage: 20
Requires Dexterity 10
The Shortbow is a powerful, ranged weapon for the early fights in the game, and it’s located in proximity to where you take control of your character for the first time.
After speaking with Diego, don’t follow him! Turn left instead. You should be able to spot the Exchange Zone at the end of the path. Head there and take another left upstairs.
Now, you should be able to spot a hut in the Exchange Zone. You are not allowed to step inside the hut; you will be treated as a trespasser. So, make sure both guards in the area are not near the hut.
Go inside the hut and find the chest in the back room. Open it and loot the key inside the chest. Then leave the room quickly. You need to get out of there fast before the guard returns to the upper floor.
If you manage to steal the key without being spotted, you can open the door to the shed in the Exchange Zone. Go downstairs, and you should spot a big iron door on the left. Wait for both guards to turn their backs on you (the guard who carries boxes will go upstairs, and the other one who writes the list of loads on the paper will move to the left of the iron door).
Once no one is around, open the iron door. The Shortbow is next to a barrel inside the shed. Grab it quickly and leave the area. Even if the guards notice it, you can still quickly run away, as they won’t follow you outside the Exchange Zone.
Where to Find the Pickaxe in Gothic 1 Remake
Edge Damage: 7
Requires Strength 5
The Pickaxe is quite slow, and it deals minimal damage, but it can still hurt entry-level enemies. There are two pickaxes that you can collect before reaching the Old Camp.
Follow the path that Diego took, and pass through the first gate. After that, you will spot a mine entrance on the left. Inside the mine, you will find a pickaxe on the ground. That’s the first one.
The second pickaxe is also at the entrance of a mine, but on top of the current mine that you visited. Follow the narrow path next to the mine towards the wooden bridge, but before reaching the breach, jump on top of the ledge on your left.
This will lead you to the second mine entrance. Inside, you will find both a pickaxe and a torch. There is also a chest in the same spot with some arrows inside.
Where to Find the Club in Gothic 1 Remake
Blunt Damage: 5
Requires Strength 5
The Club is a weapon that deals Blunt Damage, and it can be found close to the second pickaxe shown above. When you pick up the second pickaxe, look towards the wooden bridge. You will spot a series of ledges on the right side of the mine entrance.
Climb up the ledges to reach the roof of the mine. Now, turn left a little and move forward. You should be able to spot a place with white fog near the ground. Before you reach the fog, there is a corpse at the foot of a tree with a Club dropped next to it.
If you move towards the other end of the cliff past the waterfall, there is a hostile Goblin that you can kill to get his weapon, which is another Club!
Where to Find the Rusty Sword in Gothic 1 Remake
Edge Damage: 10
Requires Strength 5
The next weapon that you can find on your way to the Old Camp is the Rusty Sword. You can start your quest for it at the wooden bridge near the mine entrance. From here, pass over the bridge to the other side. You will spot the Rusty Sword on the ground.
Keep in mind that there is a Mole Rat nearby, and it will attack you as soon as you take the sword, but it’s best to just run away from it.
Where to Find the Old Sword in Gothic 1 Remake
Edge Damage: 12
Requires Strength 8
The best melee weapon that you can collect before entering the Old Camp is the Old Sword. After passing through the first gate, take the path under the wooden bridge. Go straight until you see a dead man’s body hanging from a tree. At the foot of the tree, you will find the Old Sword.
Your Strength rate is already high enough to use the Old Sword, and it can be a reliable weapon to kill creatures like Mole Rats, Goblins, or Juvenile Scavengers.
When you reach the Old Camp, you will find many NPCs to talk to and some side quests to complete. While the weapons listed here will help you get rid of some enemies in the early encounters, you should still be on the lookout for better, more powerful weapons to overcome the next rank of enemies.
