Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii said that fans should circle May 27 on their calendars, as a special stream will take place on the last Wednesday of the month. Horii stated that details concerning the next installment of the Dragon Quest franchise would be discussed, leaving fans to speculate on his words.
As one of Square Enix’s “big three” JRPG franchises alongside Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts, the Dragon Quest series has largely stuck to mixing traditional gameplay with some niche additions. The mainline entries have long utilized a turn-based battle system, though some spin-offs, such as Dragon Quest Builders, use different gameplay styles altogether. The most recent release, Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined, launched on all current-gen platforms in March. Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined received an April update to fix some outstanding issues with the game.

Fans Should Mark Dragon Quest Day On The Calendar
Though rumors about the future of the Dragon Quest franchise should be taken with a fine grain of salt, the words of the series’ creator may hold more weight than other rumors. According to a Reddit post by a user named Healingtwo_, a special Dragon Quest stream will be held on Wednesday, May 27, during the annual Dragon Quest Day festivities. The date will mark a special anniversary for the long-running JRPG franchise. On May 27, 1986, the first Dragon Quest title was released on the Famicom in Japan. Ergo, May 27 will officially mark Dragon Quest’s 40th anniversary as a franchise. Dragon Quest will join Nintendo’s Metroid and The Legend of Zelda franchises in celebrating its 40th anniversary throughout the year.

As for what the Dragon Quest Day broadcast could unveil, Horii stated during a now-private episode of his casual podcast that pieces of information about the next installment of the Dragon Quest franchise will be revealed, but did not share any further details about it. During the podcast in question, Horii and manga editor Kazuhiko Torishima discussed some unused content from the Dragon Quest franchise. Torishima previously worked with Dragon Ball manga creator and Dragon Quest series artist Akira Toriyama.
What Could Be The Next Dragon Quest Game?
Although the Dragon Quest franchise is known for sticking to its traditions, the next mainline entry is stated to shake things up. In May 2025, Horii said that Dragon Quest 12: The Flames of Fate was in full development, and that it would change the series’ turn-based battle system in some ways. Horii previously stated in 2024 that, despite the deaths of Toriyama and Dragon Quest series composer Koichi Sugiyama, he would do his best to work on Dragon Quest 12 without them. In response to Horii’s podcast comments, some Redditors debated what the next Dragon Quest project may be, with some hopeful for more news about Dragon Quest 12.
Additionally, the 2025 launch of the Switch 2 has given rise to rumors that a port of Dragon Quest 11 was in development. The rumors gained momentum when a Switch 2 version Dragon Quest 11 S: Echoes of an Elusive Age — Definitive Edition was rated in Taiwan. Once discovered, fans quickly pointed out the close timing between the rating and Dragon Quest Day. With May 27 right around the corner, time will tell what Square Enix will unveil.
