New Gothic Stardew Valley Alternative Launches to Strong, 90% Positive Reviews

A brand-new Stardew Valley-like game, Moonlight Peaks, has just been released to positive reviews online across all platforms. Where Moonlight Peaks departs most from its core inspiration, among some of its more unique features, is its focus on the supernatural.

Moonlight Peaks takes the cozy farming sim game formula of Stardew Valley and gives it a supernatural twist by putting players in the shoes of a young vampire trying to build a new life away from Count Dracula’s shadow. Instead of ordinary crops, they’ll grow mystical plants under the moonlight, learn spell-casting and potion-making, customize homes, and build relationship/pursue romances with werewolves, witches, mermaids, and other magical residents. Alongside farming and decorating, the game features story-driven quests centered around the town’s ancient families, making it feel like a cozy life sim wrapped in gothic fantasy.

It seems that its unique take on the formula is being well-received by players, with Moonlight Peaks available on PC (via Steam), Nintendo Switch, and mobile devices. Over on Steam, it sits at a 90% Positive Reviews rating after 40 submissions. That’s not a lot, but given the niche indie farming simulation game scope and how it’s been one day since release, that’s still pretty impressive. Hopefully, that trend continues among players, but critics are in a very similar boat.

Over on Metacritic, Moonlight Peaks currently sits at a 76 Metascore on PC and an 80 Metascore on Nintendo Switch consoles, earning Generally Positive reviews, with the former consisting of 8 critic reviews and the latter 9 critic reviews. Most reviews highlight the vampire setting, the charming cast, the various mechanics, and the overall horror-cozy atmosphere, with most critiques focused on its early game progression, restrictive stamina and mana systems, and similar issues. However, its issues do not overshadow the strong life sim game features of Moonlight Peaks as a whole.

Based on these reviews, Moonlight Peaks looks like it could become one of the year’s biggest cozy games, especially for players who enjoy Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing, or other life sims with a unique hook. It seems, in lieu of traditional farming sims or life sims, the genre is moving toward more hybrid games like Moonlight Peaks, as it’s not the only horror-spooky game in the genre releasing this year. Whereas Moonlight Peaks tackles that genre from the angle of the supernatural, as a more straightforward alternative to Stardew Valley or games like Animal Crossing, the next major one this year is Grave Seasons, and it is as conceptually strong as Moonlight Peaks.

Grave Seasons takes the Stardew Valley formula and injects it with a serial killer who is randomly decided at the start of each game, meaning every playthrough is different, and players can accidentally romance the serial killer in Grave Seasons, too (or intentionally, no judgment). What’s clear between Moonlight Peaks and Grave Seasons is that the genre still ahs plenty of room for experimentation, unique takes, and interesting game premises.
