A brand-new game on Steam called Never Sort By Color asks players to sort through a massive pile of LEGO-like plastic bricks containing thousands of pieces, but it also offers a satisfying payoff at the end. Brick collectors already have LEGO Skylines to look forward to, which is also coming to Steam, but they might want to check out this indie game as well.

Never Sort By Color is being developed by solo programmer Bryan Livingston, and it seems to be their first release on Steam. That said, the indie project recently caught the attention of LEGO game enthusiasts, giving it thousands of new followers waiting for its launch.

One of Atari’s best simulation franchises returns with a new game, and the devs promise it will ‘preserve the satisfaction’ of the classic titles.

Never Sort By Color Rewards LEGO Fans for Cleaning Up a Mess

Genre: First-person, Collectathon, Simulation

Release Date: November 10, 2026

Price: N/A

According to developer Bryan Livingston, Never Sort By Color is “a first-person zen organization sim about setting it right.” Players inherit a workshop with thousands of plastic bricks scattered across its floor, and they must sort them one by one. The catch is that each piece needs to be grouped with similar parts based on size and type, not color. And players’ hard work is rewarded at the end with a collection of “My Own Creation” (MOC) pieces created from those same organized bricks.

There are instruction books buried under the pile of bricks that contain designs licensed from or contributed by the work of real-life creators. After finding one of these books, players can start building the designs with their own organized bricks and later showcase the finished piece in the workshop. The developer says, “Finished models don’t ship away; they fill your workshop.” In other words, Never Sort By Color turns many LEGO fans’ nightmare of dealing with a messy pile of bricks into a dream of having dozens of organized bins full of bricks and building amazing designs with them.

Sorting Through Bricks Doesn’t Have to Be a Chore

Never Sort By Color clearly isn’t trying to be one of those games that are incredibly hard to 100% complete. Instead, it offers players a list of power-ups to make organizing bricks easier. For instance, one ability called “Bucket Sort” allows them to assign specific keys to bins and then fill them simply by pressing that button. Players will also be able to purchase new bins and trays and decorate their workshop as they see fit. Later in the game, they can use the MOC pieces as ornaments to create a cozy LEGO museum.

In recent months, there’s been an uptick of borderline impossible “sorting games” on Steam. For instance, one indie dev is making a game where players must separate wheat from chaff 10 million times. Another similar project asks players to find a needle in a haystack containing 5 million pieces. However, Never Sort By Color doesn’t seem to be following that trend. It looks challenging and time-consuming, but not impossible or like a pointless chore. It remains to be seen how LEGO fans and brick collectors will receive the game at launch.

Never Sort By Color releases on November 10, 2026, on Steam.
