Summary

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered has made a major change to the way Sneaking functions.

The remaster has become the third best-selling title of 2025, trailing behind Monster Hunter Wilds and Assassin’s Creed Shadows.

Reaching level 50 in Sneaking only allows the player to move “more quietly” in heavy armor now, when it previously negated the weight of one’s boots entirely.

One player discovered that The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered made a major change to the way Sneaking functions, surprising fans of the original game. The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered was shadow dropped by Bethesda on April 22 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, with rumors that it could be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 at some point in the future.

It was recently reported that, despite coming out recently, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered has already become the third best-selling title of 2025. It’s currently trailing behind Monster Hunter Wilds and Assassin’s Creed Shadows, which made their debut much earlier in 2025.

Oblivion Remastered Player Completes the Game as a ‘Pacifist’

An Oblivion Remastered player online manages to beat the game as a ‘pacifist,’ killing no enemies along the way.

In a recent post on Reddit, voruvi discovered that a major change has been made to Sneaking in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered. In the original game, reaching level 50 in Sneaking meant that the weight of a player’s boots would no longer affect their ability to sneak around. It was a useful perk that meant even characters in heavy armor wouldn’t have to worry about the weight of their footwear, as they could freely stealth around in even the heaviest of boots. Unfortunately, this has been changed dramatically, as reaching level 50 now only allows the player to move “more quietly.” In addition to noting the difference, voruvi took it upon themselves to do some extensive testing, sneaking up on a guard while wearing no boots, light armor, and heavy armor. They found that, as expected, heavy armor drew a lot more attention to the player.

Mastering Sneaking in Oblivion Remastered No Longer Negates the Weight of One’s Boots

Some players suggested that the change to Sneaking might be offset by reaching level 100 in Heavy Armor in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered, which allows the player to don even the heaviest of armor without it influencing their encumbrance level. After testing the theory, voruvi found that reaching level 100 didn’t really have much of an impact, as wearing light armor or going barefoot was still significantly better than wearing heavy armor. It’s worth noting that the weight of the boots is the only thing that has an impact on Sneaking, as players can freely wear heavy armor with no boots.

Several gamers suggested that using a Feather enchantment in The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered might help someone sneak around in heavy boots. However, voruvi debunked this theory as well after testing it out, stating that it seemed to have no impact on Sneaking itself, even though it does influence the encumbrance level of a character. For now, it seems as if the best way to enhance one’s Sneaking ability is to simply go barefoot when trying to stealth around. With a whole world to discover and lots of content to experience, many fans seem to be enjoying their time with Bethesda’s popular RPG.
