Sanji is the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates and one of the Wings of the Pirate King who has shown tremendous growth in the Final Saga of One Piece, specifically in the Elbaph Arc. In the recent chapters of the manga, Sanji’s strength has been focused on quite a bit by Eiichiro Oda, the creator of the story. Now, with the arrival of Nerona Imu and a display of his strength in chapter 1180, it is apparent that Oda has a new black flame power-up planned for Sanji, years after his awakening of Ifrit Jambe in Wano. Given his progression, Sanji is bound to get stronger in Elbaph and the arcs to come, and this is an exciting development for his character in the story.

Breaking Down The Limitations Of Ifrit Jambe
Up until now, Sanji’s strongest power in the story is Ifrit Jambe. He unlocked this power in the Wano Country Arc after his Lineage Factor modifications kicked in. This gave him access to an exoskeleton, as well as increased muscle mass and an advanced regeneration rate. When combined with his extremely refined Armament Haki, this gave Sanji a body strong enough to sustain even hotter blue flames, and thus, Ifrit Jambe was born. This ability is incredibly deadly, such that it was even able to take out someone as strong as Queen in a single attack.
Sanji hasn’t shown the full potential of Ifrit Jambe yet, but its limitations were clear in the battle against Nerona Imu in chapter 1180 of the manga. It was clear to see that Sanji stood absolutely no chance, and his attacks, despite being very powerful, were not even enough for Imu to go all out. This must change in the Final Saga moving forward. Sanji’s attack potency needs to improve even further, because as things stand, it limits him greatly.
How Nerona Imu’s ‘Omen’ Sets Up Black Flames For Sanji
In Chapter 1180 of the manga, One Piece unleashed what could be considered the strongest flame ability of all, and that is Nerona Imu’s Maki. This Maki, or Omen, ability most certainly stems from The Devil’s Fruit, or Akuma no Mi, which grants him the power of the Devil itself. Maki produces black flames that are so strong that neither Zoro nor Sanji can withstand them. Sanji’s own flame-like abilities, which burn incredibly hot, were nothing compared to Imu’s Maki. These black flames engulfed Sanji and caused a massive explosion in the latest chapter, showcasing superiority over the blue flames of Ifrit Jambe.

However, in doing so, Oda has shown the next step for Sanji. The evolution ladder is going to continue, which means that Sanji’s blue flames are likely going to turn into black flames in the final saga and Maki will serve as his ultimate power-up.

Elaborating The Devil Connection Between Sanji and Imu
Sanji evolving his flames from blue to black does not come out of nowhere. It must be remembered that Imu’s flames of Maki stem from his Devil Fruit power. Imu is the Devil of the One Piece world, and coincidentally, Sanji’s Diable Jambe is based on demonic themes. The literal translation of Diable Jambe is “Devil’s Leg,” and “Demon God Leg” for Ifrit Jambe. Clearly, there is a connection of Devil between Imu and Sanji. Following that line of logic, when Sanji takes his ability even further, it will have demonic influence once again, which means that his flames will most likely turn black moving forward.

How Supreme King Haki Will Evolve Sanji Flames
The big question of how Sanji will upgrade his flames even further in the Final Saga has already been answered by Oda in the Elbaph arc. With the character of Scopper Gaban, Oda has already painted a picture of what Sanji will be like in the future. Gaban is a user of all three types of Haki and specifically a master of the Color of the Supreme King. Right now, Sanji does not have access to Supreme King Haki, but he has to unlock this power soon.
Once he unlocks Supreme King Haki and uses it to coat his leg, as well as improve his offensive output, his flames will get even hotter and likely turn from blue to black. This will also allow Sanji to fully embody his moniker of Black Leg Sanji and become one of the strongest characters in the entire world. Essentially, Imu’s Maki flames will likely engulf Sanji’s legs and give him one of the highest offensive abilities in the entire series, which is something that fans absolutely cannot wait for.
