Sony’s recent PlayStation State of Plays have been packed with exciting new game reveals, but they’ve been a little light on the first-party side of things. So far, the presentations from the company this year have almost exclusively featured third- and second-party games, PC ports, and remasters of existing titles. While Sony did announce a new game from Housemarque named Saros back in February and did give players a deep dive into Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Yotei last July, it has been pretty tight-lipped about the games from its other studios. It seems, however, that the company may have some exciting PlayStation-related news to share as early as this month.

Insider Gaming reported a few days ago that Sony is planning to host a PlayStation State of Play sometime in late September. One of the big games that will be featured at this event, according to the site’s sources, is Marvel’s Wolverine. As many may know by now, this Insomniac-developed superhero game hasn’t received a new trailer ever since its announcement at the PlayStation Showcase back in September 2021. If this report is true, then hopefully, Insomniac and Sony will repeat what they did the last time they showed Wolverine by having a second surprise game up their sleeve.

Insomniac Has a Track Record of Showing Two Games Off at the Same Time

Marvel's Wolverine could make an appearance at the next State of Play

When Marvel’s Wolverine was first unveiled, the gaming community went abuzz with excitement. In spite of this, though, the game’s reveal trailer wasn’t particularly informative. It ran for less than a minute and showed nothing other than a logo for the game and some brief CGI footage. Wolverine, however, wasn’t the only Insomniac-developed game that was shown off at the 2021 PlayStation Showcase. Much to some fans’ surprise, the company also announced Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 at the event, with a similarly short CGI trailer.

It’s pretty rare for developers to announce two new games at the same event, but for Insomniac, it’s not an unusual occurrence. During the 2020 PlayStation 5 reveal event, Insomniac unveiled not one, but two new titles for the then-upcoming console. It announced a spin-off of its 2018 Spider-Man game called Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, as well as a new mainline Ratchet & Clank title called Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Miles Morales was, of course, a launch title for the PlayStation 5, while Rift Apart was released for the system in June 2021.

In Addition to Wolverine, The Next State of Play Could Feature a New Venom Game

Since Insomniac has a history of showing two games off at the same time, it’s possible that the rumored State of Play this month will feature another title from the company other than Wolverine. This title could, in fact, be the Venom spin-off game that was leaked years ago. For those who are unaware, Insomniac was hit with a devastating cyberattack in December 2023, which caused many of the studio’s internal documents to be leaked online. Some of these documents provided an outline of all the projects that Insomniac intended to work on for the next 10 years, and they even revealed that the studio was, at one point, planning to release a PS5-exclusive Venom game sometime in 2025.

The 2023 Insomniac hack revealed that the company has (or had) plans to release a series of new X-Men games sometime after the launch of Marvel’s Spider-Man 3.

While It’s Unlikely to Happen, Insomniac Could Even Tease Spider-Man 3 at the Next State of Play

It’s not exactly clear if this Venom game was ever in active development, or if it was merely a project that was pitched to PlayStation executives in 2023. That said, if this title is still in the works, then the rumored State of Play this month would be the perfect venue for Insomniac to announce it in. Alongside Wolverine or Venom, maybe the studio could even give players a glimpse at the next mainline Marvel’s Spider-Man game, just like it did with Spider-Man 2 back in 2021. Admittedly, though, that game may still be in its early stages of development, so it being shown off at the next PlayStation State of Play is a little less likely.
