You can get one of two different bonuses from the Bottomless Pit in Warhammer 40K: Rogue Trader, but you need to know which dialogue options lead to the right outcomes. When you interact with the pit, you’ll enter a trance-like state where the forces of the pit itself is trying to influence you. From here, you can either get the Champion of the Abyss or Champion of the Darkness talents, each having its own unique bonus for your characters in Rogue Trader.

Rogue Trader: Bottomless Pit Choices Guide
The Bottomless Pit can be found in a jungle world in System Speculo, which is just to the northwest of the Trinnitos system in the Koronus Expanse map. This encounter is completely optional (like the one with the Recolliger’s Plot in Rogue Trader), and you might miss it if you don’t visit this system.
To properly interact with the Bottomless Pit, investigate the nearby inscription on the wall near the ledge first. The pit may seem dangerous, but by interacting with it, you can either get the Champion of the Abyss talent for whoever’s inspecting the pit, or the Champion of the Darkness talent for one of your party members. For the sake of this guide, I used my own Rogue Trader to inspect the Bottomless Pit.
Interact with the pit, and whatever entity is behind it will start invading your character’s head. The first few dialogue options here don’t seem to matter (just don’t pick the option to step away from the hole), so just pick the ones with skill checks that have the highest odds of succeeding. This will yield bonus XP, but it will not affect the little story that the Bottomless Pit is playing in your head.
However, once you reach the third story block, you’ll be presented with a bunch of different options. This is where the outcome of this little event diverges.
How to Get Champion of the Abyss in Rogue Trader
If you pass the Toughness check and successfully cut off a piece of yourself for the Bottomless Pit, you’ll get the Champion of the Abyss talent. This will give you +2 Weapon Skill and +5 Coercion for free. It’s a nice bonus to have for melee characters or ones using origins/archetypes that take advantage of the Coercion characteristic, like the Arbitrator from the Lex Imperialis DLC. Coercion can also come in handy during certain conversations or skill checks when you’re exploring the world.
How to Get Champion of the Darkness in Rogue Trader
In the Bottomless Pit dialogue story block that asks you to sacrifice someone, you get up to five different options (excluding the Toughness check option noted above). These options represent one of the members in your current retinue. The descriptions in the dialogue will roughly cue you in on who’s being referred to, but so far, here’s what I’ve gathered.
The “decrepit old man” is Abelard
The “brawny woman with bloodied hands” is Argenta
The “sinewy young man wearing a blindfold” is Heinrix
The “ugly mutant with multiple heads” is Pasqal
The “infant who is crying piteously” is Cassia
The “strange animal-like creature” is Idira
Like in the Astray quest, your choice here has a permanent effect based on your choice. Whoever you pick here will suddenly disappear from your retinue, then the Missing Errand will pop up on your journal. Head back to your voidship, and you’ll get a transmission where you can choose to either scan the planet for your missing party member, or leave them behind forever. The latter will permanently remove the missing character for the rest of the campaign and increase your Heretical Conviction. Meanwhile, the former will instead recover your missing member and grant them the Champion of the Abyss talent.
Champion of the Darkness allows the affected character to learn and improve the Lore (Xenos) skill regardless of whether their background or archetype allows it, and it’ll also give them a permanent +5 Willpower bonus too. Willpower is mainly used by Psykers like Cassia, as many of their offensive abilities scale with their Willpower bonus.
