Sony’s lead console architect Mark Cerny has hinted at a possible release window for the PlayStation 6, saying that the console will be released “in a few years’ time.” These recent comments about the PlayStation 6 have sparked increased speculation among fans, as the release may be slightly further away than some gamers have previously believed.
Released in 2020, the PlayStation 5 has been the most successful console of the current generation, vastly outselling the Xbox Series X/S. Sony recently confirmed that the PS5 sold over 80.3 million units, showing a slight upward trend in sales this year. While the PS5 was followed by the PlayStation 5 Pro, a more powerful mid-gen device released back in 2024, gamers are still eagerly awaiting the PS6.
PlayStation 6 Release Window
The PS6 could be released in “a few years’ time,” which may indicate a 2028 release.
In a new video on the official PlayStation YouTube channel, Cerny talked with AMD’s senior vice president, Jack Huynh, discussing the graphical improvements that the partnership between Sony and the chip manufacturer will bring. At the end of the video, Cerny says that it’s still early days for the technologies being discussed, and he’s excited to bring them “to a future console in a few years’ time.” This short line sparked a lot of speculation, as many believe that this could mean that the PlayStation 6 would be released in late 2028. The late 2028 theory makes sense. Not only has Cerny previously indicated that the PS6 won’t be released anytime soon, but the executive would likely not specifically mention “a few years” if there were plans to launch the next-gen console in 2026 or early 2027.
This news will likely frustrate fans hoping that the PS6 would be released in 2027. While this window is not impossible, previous theories that pointed out 2027 as the most likely year for the PlayStation 6’s launch seem less likely now. Each time Cerny talks about the project, it seems like it’s still considerably far away from the finish line.
Not much is known about Sony’s next console, and speculation has become more rampant in the last few months. For instance, alleged PlayStation 6 specs were leaked online earlier this year. According to these claims, the PS6 console will boast 40 to 48 RDNA 5 compute units, reaching up to 3 gigahertz or more. Also, its CPU will feature eight Zen 6 or later cores, which will be a considerable upgrade when compared to the current PS5. Obviously, it’s best to take these rumors with a grain of salt.
