The original Steam version of Final Fantasy 7 that was first launched in 2013 will soon be unavailable, as Square Enix stated in late January that it will be replaced with a new port soon. The updated Steam version of Final Fantasy 7 will be included at no additional cost to users who already have the 2013 port on their account.

The news of the updated port came as Square Enix observed Final Fantasy 7’s 29th anniversary. As one of the most beloved RPGs of all time, Final Fantasy 7 was first ported to Windows in June 1998, one year after it’s original PlayStation launch. Following its success, the original PC version of FF7 would end up providing the source code of later ports, including the one released on Steam in 2013. That version would, in turn, serve as the foundation for current-gen console ports of Final Fantasy 7, giving a new generation of fans another way to experience one of the Final Fantasy franchise’s well-aged top entries.

Steam Is Getting a Re-Release of Final Fantasy 7 Soon

However, Square Enix will soon make some changes to the Steam port of Final Fantasy 7. Although the date has not been disclosed as of this writing, the 2013 version of Final Fantasy 7 will be delisted from Steam in the future. However, an updated version will take its place, with some unannounced features for players to utilize. Additionally, Steam users who already have the 2013 port of Final Fantasy 7 will receive the updated version at no added cost. That said, the new port has a few caveats for players to consider. Save data from the 2013 Steam version will not carry over to the updated 2026 edition, so fans will have to replay Final Fantasy 7 from scratch on the updated Steam port, though their 2013 version save data should remain intact.

Additionally, the older port will be relabeled on Steam as Final Fantasy 7 – 2013 Edition, while the new version will simply be titled Final Fantasy 7. Both Steam versions will continue to be available to users who already own the game, and the 2013 port can be downloaded and installed at any time. But, at the time of this writing, it is not clear how some Steam mods will work on Final Fantasy 7’s new port. In short, fans looking to play the updated version of FF7 with their favorite mods must wait for additional information. However, Final Fantasy 7 is currently discounted to $4.79 on Steam until February 4, so fans looking to play the re-release can get the 2013 version at a cheap price beforehand.

Final Fantasy 7 Remains Firmly in the Spotlight

The updated Steam port of the original Final Fantasy 7 is not the only thing that the saga has planned throughout the year. With Square Enix releasing Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade on the Switch 2 and Xbox Series X/S consoles in January 2025, all eyes turned toward the upcoming third part in the Remake series. Although major details remain elusive, game director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that FF7 Remake’s third part will still utilize Unreal Engine 4. Additionally, the official title of the third chapter has been locked in, though the name has not been revealed as of this writing.

Although the debate around Final Fantasy 7’s original version and current-gen remakes is a contentious topic, there is little doubt that the game has left a lasting mark on popular culture. It remains to be seen what new features and changes the updated Steam version of Final Fantasy 7 will offer to players.
