Star Wars: Every Lightsaber Color, Explained

Star Wars simply wouldn’t be the same without the popular lightsaber. These sci-fi laser swords are easily one of the most popular aspects of the entire franchise and helped shape its entire future. Originally, lightsaber colors didn’t matter, and the colors were simply meant to represent good and evil. The good guys used the blue lightsabers, and the bad guys would use the red. It was all very straightforward.

As the story expanded, the lightsaber took on a much more detailed role in the story. Jedi and Sith began to develop almost symbiotic relationships with their weapons, the crystal even choosing the wielder in several cases. Today, each color is associated with a broad generalization that mostly fits the user, but that is not always the case. Ultimately, a lightsaber’s color doesn’t often define their respective user, unless the color is red or white.

Pink Lightsabers Remain the Rarest Lightsaber Crystal in Canon

Number of Named Canon Users: 0

At this point, Pink Lighsabers remain the rarest color in all canon. At this point, there hasn’t been a named user of the blade, but they have appeared in canon material. Pink lightsabers are one of the options afforded Cal Kestis in the Jedi: Survivor and Jedi: Fallen Order games. Several padawans from the children’s show, Young Jedi Adventures, have wielded pink sabers in the background. Since there aren’t any official users, fans have only begun to guess at the colors’ deeper meaning.

Since pink is technically created by mixing red and white, several fans have theorized that pink lightsaber users are strong in the dark side of the force, but choose the light side. Similar to purple lightsabers, many fans have assumed pink lightsaber users might have access to powers on both sides of the force, but that has yet to be confirmed. Until a more developed character utilizes a pink blade, fans will just have to assume what the interesting and unique color could mean.

Orange Lightsabers Haven’t Gotten Much Use in the Modern Canon

Notable Canon Users: Baylan Skoll, Shin Hati

Orange lightsabers are another extremely rare color of lightsaber within the wider canon. Until relatively recently, there were not any canon users until the live-action Ashoka series. Both users, Baylan Skoll and Shin Hati, are Dark Jedi which offer some clarification about the color. Given that the only two canon users are Dark Jedi, it can be assumed that orange lightsabers are primarily used by fallen Jedi or morally ambiguous individuals.

Baylan Skoll survived through the horrors of Order 66 and the fall of the Jedi Order, so it’s not entirely surprising he fell to the dark. His apprentice is extremely aggressive, which is more fitting to the warmer color. They might not be Sith, so their lightsabers aren’t red, but they fall somewhere in the middle, which denotes their unique color. Hopefully, more orange lightsaber wielders will help illuminate the color to a greater degree in the future.

Yellow Lightsabers Are Primarily Used By Jedi Temple Guards

Notable Canon Users: Rey Skywalker, Asajj Ventress, and the Temple Guards

Yellow Lightsabers are interesting because they are either used by individuals who have gone through extreme personal growth or Jedi Temple Guards. Rey Skywalker gains a yellow lightsaber after finally accepting her heritage and deciding to choose the Skywalker name anyway. Asajj Ventress begins utilizing a yellow lightsaber after she successfully leaves the Sith and reforms to the light. This implies that a yellow lightsaber could signify a personal triumph, but the blade’s other distinction somewhat discredits that.

The other main users of yellow lightsabers are the Jedi Temple Guards. It was also an extremely popular color of saber during the High Republic era of the Jedi. It fell into disuse before the events of the Clone Wars, but was still regularly utilized by the Temple Guards. What started as one of the most used lightsaber colors has simply become a distinction of a specific role within the Order.

The Darksaber Remains the Only Canon Black Lightsaber in Existence

Notable Canon Users: Din Djarin, Pre Vizsla, and Darth Maul

Black lightsaber are fascinating because there are several known users, but only one canon blade. At this point, the Darksaber is the only of its kind and was first created by a Mandalorian Jedi, Tarre Vislaz, during 1050 BBY. Since then, it has become an incredibly important relic for both the Mandalorians and the Jedi themselves. Most recently, the blade was given to Bo-Katan Kryze by Din Djarin after he won the blade from Moff Gideon.

The darksaber is extremely fascinating as it can change its size and shape based on its user. The blade is also incredibly unique since it is the only blade with a straight edge in the entire series. Given the importance of the darksaber, it’s incredibly unlikely there will be anything of its kind in the future. Any other darksaber type of blade would simply make the important blade less unique.

Green Lightsaber Wielders Typically Have a Strong Connection to the Force

Notable Canon Users: Luke Skywalker, Yoda, and Qui-Gon Jinn

Green lightsabers are typically associated with Jedi with stronger connections to the force. More often than not, green lightsaber users prefer negotiations to combat, but that isn’t always the case, as demonstrated by Kit Fisto. Sometimes the green lightsabers are meant to denote the role of Jedi Counselor, but this isn’t always the case as they are used even after the order falls to Order 66. Green blades can also be in a variety of hues, but typically mean the same thing regardless of shade.

The most notable users of green blades are Luke Skywalker, Yoda, and Qui-Gon Jinn. Each of these figures prefers to use negotiation and their force abilities before their blades, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t skilled in combat. Luke Skywalker is one of the strongest characters in the Legends continuity and Yoda is easily the strongest Jedi of the Order for several centuries. Either way, Green lightaber wielders are typically some of the most powerful figures the series’ has to offer.

White Lightsaber Crystals Are Created From Purifying Red Crystals

Notable Canon Users: Ahsoka Tano

White Lightsabers are a rare but well understood phenomenon in the Star Wars universe. They happen when a red lightsaber crystal is purified and the dark side is removed from it. After the crystal is purified, the crimson blade becomes a solemn white. As of now, the only canon user of White lightsabers within the series is Ahsoka Tano. It is honestly incredibly fitting that two of the rarest lightsaber crystal colors are utilized within the same live-action series.

Ashoka purifies the crystals in the canon novels, but it has yet to be shown on screen. Ashoka originally gains her crystals from an inquisitor on the planet Raada, and uses them for the rest of her career. At that point, she is neither Jedi nor Sith, which is represented with the lack of color within her blade.

Red Lightsaber Crystals Are Created by Bleeding any Colored Crystal With the Dark Side

Notable Canon Users: Darth Vader, Darth Maul, and Count Duku

Red lightsabers are the most recognizable and most understood blade colors within the entire series. Their meaning has not changed since the beginning of the series, and have been used to represent the Sith since the franchise’s premiere. The first Red Lightsaber audiences saw belonged to Darth Vader, but is more widely used within the Prequel and Old Republic eras. Before the rule of two, the Sith were just as prominent as the Jedi, but their selfishness became their undoing.

There have been instances in the legends content of Jedi using red lightsabers, but that choice is extremely rare. More often than not, Red Lightsabers are only utilized by Jedi who fell to the dark side at one point or another. Any Jedi using red lightsabers likely stopped doing so, like Adi Gallia, once the SIth were confirmed to have returned. At this point, the only characters who actually utilize are actually dark side force users.

Purple Lighstabers Reflect a Perfect Balance Between Both Sides of the Force

Notable Canon Users: Darth Revan, Mace Windu, and Vernestra Rwoh

Purple Lightsabers are incredibly unique because they donate a force user who walks both paths of the force. Purple Lightsabers are the ultimate representation of balance and are usually only used by the most powerful figures in the franchise. Mace Windu is the greatest example of this. His use of Vapaad in coordination with his purple blade denotes a character that has walked both sides of the force.

The only other canon characters to use a purple lightsaber are Darth Revan and Vernestra Rwoh. Both figures are known to be incredibly powerful, but have received much more development in legends than the canon content. Thankfully, there seem to be more purple-bladed users as the series goes on.

Blue Lightsabers Signify Someone Who Is Strong in the Force and Lightsaber Combat

Notable Canon Users: Obi-Wan Kenobi, Luke Skywalker, and Anikan Skywalker

Blue Lightsabers are the most common color of saber used within the series. They usually denote a Jedi with a fair level of skill in lightsaber combat, but they are often just the general color. In the beginning, there were only red and blue lightsabers before Green was added in Star Wars: Return of the Jedi because it would look better against the dessert background. Now blue lightsabers are simply the most common.

They might be the most widely used Jedi saber, but that doesn’t mean their users are any less powerful. Both Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anikan SKywalker utilized blue lightsabers at their peaks, and they are considered some of the most powerful Jedi in the entire franchise. Utlimately, blue lightsabers are not only the most common color, but signifies at least some skill in combat.
